Time Warner downgrades DVI?

Here's my setup:
STB: Pioneer from Time Warner with Component and DVI outputs.
HDTV: Hitachi 57S700 with component and DVI (HDCP)
If I use the component cables, I can display in 720p and 1080i. From the STB you can set the output to 480/720/1080. The picture looks great. I read that a DVI connection will give you the best picture, so I get a Monster DVI cable and hook it up, instead of the component cables. I notice the picture is not as good, the TV display info tells me that the picture is coming in at 480p. So, I go into the STB menu to change it, and guess what, the menu for choosing the output is gone!!
I switched the cables, powered off and on many times, and everytime the DVI cable is connected, the Time Warner box takes away the output menu and forces 480p. What is going on here?!? 480p is NOT HD, and it pales in comparison to 720/1080.
Anybody have any knowledge about this??

Check the HDTV Hardware forum at avsforum.com. I'm sure the answer is there somewhere.

Finally got ahold of TW customer "support". The first two support people had no idea what was going on. The first lady actually said "Not very many of us here know about the HDTV connections, except for one guy, let me see if he's here..." *click, and I was disconnected, and had to call back again. After repeating the problem all over again, I finally asked the second guy if he had seen the connectors on the HD set top box they give out, and he said "Uhh, no, let me get a supervisor." The supervisor at least understood the problem I was trying to convey, but was still baffled. So, he is going to try to set up a similar scenario at the TW office, but he probably won't be able to get back to me until Saturday at the earliest.... >:-(

at least you have DVI out from your box from TW. the HD boxes here only have component out. not that i care much since my HDtv doesn't have DVI.
i'm completely amazed everytime i watch HD from the box with component cables. i'd be interested to see how much better the picture can be with DVI instead. -

Me too! I can't wait to give a comparison review if TW can get their stuff together.
