Larry's rings install

I did the rings in my SDA-2a's today.
Finest quality workmanship on the parts. Larry is a craftsmen who obviously takes pride in his work. Now that I have finished smooching butt, on to the review.
Everything went as documented here on the forum with one exception. The MW rings were not close. Even with their cut sections still a good 3/8th too long to fit. It was an easy effort to mark and cut with a set of tin snips. Easy install past that. I have not seen much here on the 2A directly but from others threads I found half again more wood than was expected. It is more than an inch thick.
With that one exception that can in no way be blamed on Larry everything went as it should have. Work slow and work careful. clean the holes out well and make sure the top and bottom are clean. I had a tough time with the first one until I remembered someone here (F1 I think) saying something about tapering the holes. A few minutes with a round rasp and everything fit perfect.
I even got an extra screw.:redface: How is that for service?
As has been mentioned before be careful with your tweeters. I was warned and was being careful and stressed one well past where I should have. I did not crack the tweeter, the plastic was not happy. Anyone using moretite should be extra careful.
All in all they are great stuff for a vintage speaker. Thank you for doing this a second time.

I did not give any thought to images. I was only thinking about having them back together. oops
I would tell you that I can hear a difference after everything that has been done thus far. The Dynamat X made a big difference. With the crossovers I will be into these for not quite $600.00. Much more than I could get for them but I am not sure I could buy anything as nice for the same money. -
I am sure you can't.... besides Sda's are so different everything else is just speakers.:razz:POLK SDA 2.3 TLS BOUGHT NEW IN 1990, Gimpod/Sonic Caps/Mills RDO-198

I am not sure I would go quite that far but close anyway. Easily the best sounding speakers I have ever owned.
With everything I have done thus far the biggest difference I think I hear is a tighter, fuller bass/mid bass. Drums are tighter with more punch. Listening to Glenn Miller last night I noticed everything sounded cleaner with better separation of the instruments. I am not sure if what I was hearing was the "ringing" I have read described. For lack of a better word they sounded blurry before the Dynamat and rings.
Good stuff. Once again I thank everyone who has been helpful -
DAMN!!!!! These things are sounding nice.
If the crossovers make the same difference as everything else the silly things will be worth the $600.00 I will have in them.
$90.00 for SDA-2a's plus about 40 bucks in gas and Bloody Marys associated with getting them
RDO194-1's, gaskets, rings, spikes, ect, its adds up quick. $300.00 for crossover parts is a **** but it comes with the model. I would have purchased differently had I known. A really nice set of 2B's is more than $90.00 so I guess I make a hundred, hundred fifty, there.
Tijuana Brass doing harmonies used to be a great harmony. Now I hear three separate notes making for great harmony.
I am afraid of what might happen when DK becomes more dedicated to stereo than he is now and starts doing serious research. -
Glad you are enjoying them so much. The crossovers will make a substantial difference as well. You won't regret the money spent on the parts when you hear the difference they make. Plus the parts last a long time. Please tell us what you think after breaking in the capacitors and resistors.
Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion."
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Please, would somebody give me a quick note about how to order a set of Larry's rings for a pair of SDA SRS 1.2a speakers and a pair of SDA 1c speakers.

That stuff is crap, gunky and there's better alternatives that have already been discussed here. I've seen many stories of that stuff being used, not just here, and it causing problems. Granted, most of that is in fact at the user level and overdoing the application of it in the first place.
In regards to our forum, the exact issue LWB talked about in the first post. If you use Larry's killer rings with the nice foam gaskets that Brgman was making, I can't think of a better solution.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. i used it and it made a mess of things, making it difficult to remove drivers if needed. perhaps that is what is the point?
that being said, i think it does a better seal than Armacell, but perhaps the ease of use is a trade off?Polk Lsi9
