After chasing some rattles in my RTA-11TL's....I finally have had time to start building my 2 channel rig.
Baseline:
NAD 7150 being used as pre
Carver m400A
Polk RTA11TL
semi-worthless sony 5 disk changer.
Issue:
I am running into some boominess in the low-end....which is rock-star fun, but not super accurate. Room dimensions dictate the speaker placement here...so getting them out from the wall is not an option.
This EQ has a RTA function in it.....and I can dial things out. Includes the mic...local craigslist posting:

Before seeing it I got them down to $75.....what do you guys think?

Placement does make a difference in the bass boominess. Since you are constrained on placement, you might consider some room treatments and/or bass traps. Try placing some cloth sofa cushions at the walls behind and/or beside the speakers and see if it helps. I only do this when my wife is not home.
As far as using an eq, it may help. I have used them successfully in cars. Most folks seem to avoid them for home audio but it isn't too much money for something to experiment with.
