Looking to upgrade my receiver to push the speakers more, and looks like the step up will be a 7.1 Onkyo. When I am only using the 5 speakers+ Sub is that going to leave me in the same situation as I am in upgrading from 85 watts to 100 watts?? That and it looks like the 100 watt receivers allow for an additional amp should I want even more push..which I probably will. What do you think??

85 watts to 100 watts will not yield you the extra oomph you are seeking. you are right on looking for a receiver with pre outs and getting an external amp at some pointRig1 - Totem Hawks, Benchmark HDR, Parasound A21, Sonus, Samsung 52 LCD, Audioquest Type4
Rig2 - LFD LE IV Integrated, Harbeth P3ESR, Rega Dac, MF V-Link, IMAC, Audioquest Type4 -

All over it, but the amp on the way has 110 watts and thinking it'll thump...for now. The NR 414 was rated at 80 watts ?"if it's not fun, it's not worth it & remember folks, "It's All About The Music"!!

You mean the receiver on the way, dontcha ?
A seperate amp and a receiver are 2 different animals. Once again, it's not the amount of watts, it's the current that speakers crave. While the 2000's are nice speakers, they have limits and you'll only get so much "thump" as you put it no matter what you feed them. Get yourself a good subwoofer for the thump you like. Happy listening and good luck to you.HT SYSTEM-

get an external amp. Nothing beats it when it comes to clean power. There is no receiver that beats an actual power amp.

i fooled around with receivers for a loooooong time and in 2011 i decided to just buy a parasound 5x225 rms power amp. The sound was just a new experience. Even they speakers sounded like they were something else.

Just dont ask your gf or wife to tell you if she can hear a difference between the receiver and the amp.. even though she actually might be able to tell lol

First things first. The Onk 708 7.2 will be delivered tomorrow and I will enjoy it for a spell before buying the amp, but I will be buying one. Maybe Onkyo makes one that will work great??"if it's not fun, it's not worth it & remember folks, "It's All About The Music"!!

I'm very new to separates. I was in the same boat as you, I wanted to "play" around a bit. At first I had the Onkyo NR 509 (No preouts). I thought that was good, but boy was I wrong. I got an older Denon 3805, and it was night and day. I thought I knew what sound stage and imaging was all about, but again I was wrong lol. Not too long after that, I got an Adcom 555 for $250, and my suggestion is run, don't wait to get an external amp. I too thought I'll wait, but after I got the Adcom sound quality went up and in hindsight, I would not go back (I got lucky that the Adcom was for sale locally at a decent price and I didn't have to wait long for something to come up on CraigsList).
I just picked up an Adcom 2535 to complete my 5.1. I mostly listen to 2ch audio so I am happy with the 200wpc stereo. I was really happy already with movies/vgames with just the receiver, so having 60wpc to the rears and a bridged 200w to the center, I am good to go.
Since no one's said this yet, I'll say it, a few members recommended me to go at least 200wpc to really have a good difference. Hope this helps . I am away on a trip right now and talking about this makes me really miss my system.Humble System

Thanks and I am from St Paul as well. Born and raised, now in Ohio. I will make the add, but I can't run, as the funds are tight at the moment. I will do it!!"if it's not fun, it's not worth it & remember folks, "It's All About The Music"!!

Oh awesome! I actually am from Lombard, right outside Chicago. I ended up going to school at University of St. Thomas (you probably know the school >.<) so I'm still here in STPL. I too did not have a lot of funds, actually zero, but I did a lot of picking up free stuff on CL and selling them right on CL lol to come up with funds. Anyway, good luck with the journey and enjoy.
Nice to see a fellow Minnesowtan, even though technically I'm adopted Minnesowtan!Humble System
