Howdy fellas,

Names Shawn, I have known about club polk for a good long while but have never had much of an excuse to join until recently that is.

After an 8 year search, i finally tracked down a pair of Polk's that have been on my wish list since I first became an "audiophile" if that's what y'all would like to call em! it started out with a crappy little Yamaha RX-350 receiver and 4 Polk monitor 5JR's I ran this set up for a short time before stepping up to my first set of separates which was a Sansui AU/TU-999 set, pretty burly little integrated, it was heavy and had some real power and though it had a real tube like sound it rocked them 5JR's!long story short, I loved the the 5jr's and always wanted to step up I spent countless days researching better speakers both in Polk and other companies, I always wanted a pair of Polk Audio 2.3, 2.3tl's, or 1.2tl's those were the main 3 I had a lot of interest in. I looked and looked for those three among other speakers on my wish list for the past 8 years here's a short list of what has lead up to these:

Cerwin Vega D-9's
New amp-Phase linear 700B- rebuilt
Cerwin Vega AT-15's
New amp-Soundcraftsmen MA-5002
Cerwin Vega PD-9's
New amp-Kenwood Basic M2A-(for subs)
all three off these sets at the same time for a period-(I liked it loud)
Thiel CS-2's, Dual NHT SW-2SI's
New amp-PS Audio Delta 200/ PS Audio 6.0 pre
Vandersteen model 2CI
DIY monitors "indignias" (some of you may know of these from audiokarma)
Dick Sequerra MET8-MKII subs
New amps-PS Audio Delta 250 mono blocks
Vandersteen model 3A
DIY 12"DVC Passive sub with internal x-over
New amp-sold the Delta 250 mono's and went back to the Delta 200, it was far superior to the mono's for sound
after selling off a bunch of gear and moving and joing the army and moving again, I ended up with this system

Thiel CS-2's
DIY 12" DVC passive sub
PS Audio Delta 200 amp, PS Audio 6.0 passive pre
Oppo Digital DV970HD transport
Adcom GDA-600 DAC (Highly modded)
Kenwood Basic M2A Amp for the sub
DBX 120X-DS subharmonic synthesizer
Rocketfish RF-RBKIT wireless signal transmitter to eliminate wires strung all the way to my sub-(works great!)

This rig really was quite impressive for what it was it did a phenomenal job for 2 channel and I wasn't really looking to hard to replace anything, I was content with what I had specially due to the fact that now that I'm in the Army I don't have a whole lot of down time to just chill and listen to some tunes in a real listening matter, for the most part its background noise, any whoo... I was just searching around on old craigslist lookin for random stuff and I see a post that reads "polk speakers" I looked into it and the only picture there was a picture of the obviously extremely distinct SDA signature badge that came on the SDA SRS line, I wasn't sure of what they were but i knew I had to have em, the guy didn't know what the models were so i had him send me pictures and sure enough they were Polk SDA SRS-2.3's the guy was asking $300, I asked him if he was interested in trade but due to the fact that he was a gym teacher he had no interest in my brand new Snapon torque wrench, I didn't have the money, my heart sunk and for the next 2 days i fought to find a way to trade up and make this deal happen, with no luck i reluctantly told the guy I just can't afford 300 at the time but what i could do was put down 50 to drop the add and consider them sold and 250 when i get paid on the 15'th he shot me down and i was heart broken, in fear that 8 years of searching was walking away from me and I had no chance, I talked to the wife, we sat down and did our finances, after bills, groceries and food we had just 200 cash left and knew that if i spent it all we'd be crunching but we agreed that we would be ok, so I offered the guy 200 cash and sure enough he was quick to say yes, after 8 years, 3 days of suffering and 200 bucks I finally got me a set of Polk SDA SRS-2.3's they are what I'm running now and LOVE EM!!! I am going to be building a cable for em here soon when i can choose what wire I'd like to go with and after my son is born (he came two weeks after the speakers) I'm going to start shelving tweeters, caps and resistors to do some mods and updates on em! also i'll be putting in WBT binding post's, re-veneering the tops and bottoms and putting on some cabinet spikes.

Well guys, that's my story! can't wait to meet every one and read more!

Shawn.

Welcome to Club Polk (and the SDA experience)!

Definitely worth waiting for and, as said above, great PRICE on those. Congrats.

Also, there are very few if any here that know more about your new speakers than Jesse (F1nut)! Enjoy your speakers and search up some of the endless "mod" threads available on this site!

    Welcome to CP!

Man you got a great price on those. Post pics when you can.

As someone else said, once you get used to their sound you can take those bad boys to a whole new level by implementing mods found on CP.

Thank's for the warm welcome guys, it's gonna be a bit before I can afford the mods but I have already started compiling thread links to all the mods, I'm VERY interested in building a AI-1 dreadnaught that DarqueKnight has a lenghty thread on, love the Idea of the XLR cables I'm all for classy factory looking upgrades and mods! I have ALOT of research to do on caps before I figure out which ones id like to go with. I have used Sonicap and Auricap and had some good luck with them as well as Nichicon gold, -(used both Sonicap and Nichicon gold in my Adcom GDA600) My dad up in east TX build tube amps and while I been busy with the Army he has researched countless hours to refine his capacitor and resistor preference going to pick his brain and let him know my project, ill see what his opinions are for good high quality capacitors to use in the polks as well as run through the numerous threads here, I'd like to get the accumulate opinion is for what one would see as essentially the best parts for the job, I am not worried about cost, I will be stocking parts for a while and once I finally have everything I need I will begin the process.

One big thing I am worried about is the size and shape of my living room, I am worried that much like my Thiels I won't get an accurate sound stage or reproduction do to the restrictions of my living room. Is this a reasonable fear with the SRS 2.3's? or do they do a pretty solid job in any placement? they sound ok right now quite honestly nothing to spectacular but that was very much expected due to the fact that I do not have the AI-1 cable, the x-overs need a good going through especially due to their age and I do not have the cabinets spiked nor do i have the RDO194's I mean, this will all come in due time but until then I expect them to sound decent but far from spectacular, Could be due to the c=fact that I'm somewhat used to some considerably decent speakers like the Vandersteen 3A's and Magnepan MG-IIB's (forgot about those in my story, as well as 2 set of Jim Holts Statements, a set of Klipsch Forte-II's and a couple others) but regardless, I know they can shine but I know its gonna take some time and a little work/$$$.

Pictures are very soon to follow, going to break out the wifes Nikon and tripod and see if I can't snap some good high res shots for yall, the speakers are far from mint, but very very worth the 200 I spent on em just need a little TLC on the cabinets.

    Shawn.

(EDIT) My apologies for any bad grammar, clicked post but forgot to go through spell check, what can I say... I'm only a soldier

Basic set up....4 to 8 feet apart, 5 to 6 inches off the back wall, no toe in and at least 3 feet from any side wall.

If you don't have the SDA cable, you can make one. Only the pin connection is used unless you're running non-common ground power, in which case you will need the AI-1 type cable. Both pin and blade connections are used then.

You need carpeting of some kind over that tile floor.

Something to the effect of a small rug under each speaker? they are 4'4" apart and the left speakers is 2'7" from the door as you see in the picture, both speakers are even off the back wall at 6", unfortunately I cant move left speaker any further away from the door as the base of my fire place is in the way and my wife will chew my head off for changing things the way they are now(she's pregnant...not good!), hell she dont even care for the the polks to begin with  but she knows I love em and knows the story behind em so she allows it!

About the cable, I guess for now I could get a heavy gauge wire, tin the tips and use that for now until I get all my parts to make a a worthy cable, also I am not sure if the PS Audio Delta 200 is common ground or not, I see a fellow member here during a search for info on the amp also had one at some point but didn't say weather or not it was common ground!, I'll get'r figured out though!

Thanks so much for the help!!

Also, (sorry for the multiple posts) I have been looking into the AI-1 Dreadnought isolation transformer, excuse my ignorance but I don't completely understand whether or not since my Delta 200 is common ground if the dreadnought is gonna do a thing for me, reading up on DarqueKnights thread he states "It already sounds like I have new, more powerful amps." the JC-1's can coupled for common ground so does that mean I may get the same sonic capabilities with the Dreadnought as he has with his JC-1's??

    Shawn.

While it's true that using an AI-1 interface is not a requirement with common ground amps my experience is competely positive. I believe there are several others here on the forum who use it with common ground amps with similar results.

I found that the improvement in smoothness, clarity, depth of soundstage was in the same league as upgrading the Xovers. I was actually schocked. It took a little while for it to burn in and reach it's full potential.

I used it with an Odyssey Stratos Stereo Plus, which I've since had upgraded to Dual Mono.

If you do a search you can probably find some threads about this.
