Speaker Selection Help

Brand new to this site and am looking for advice. We recently purchased a Yamaha R-S700 Stereo receiver in order to add music throughout our home. This is an existing home with no current wiring. I should say I do not have issues adding wiring and for the rooms I would like music I can get to those walls fairly easy. The more I read the more I get confused! I started by thinking I would add music to our kitchen/common dining area, living room, and game room. I started to read about location for speakers and I read where the min distance for speaker spacing is 5ft. My issue is with the way the rooms are designed that I do not really have that space (windows/doorways/fireplaces etc). Does Polk make a single stereo speaker that could work for this design? Hopefully I explained the situation correctly. I would say my preference would be in-wall but I can be flexible.
