Threaded inserts on SRS's?

I disassembled one of the recently purchased SRS 1.2's today to install rings, dynamat, and armacell. MW drivers are dated 11/87 to 3/88. All looks good, but I found something I haven't seen before. The drivers are held in place with ~1/8" x 1/2" hex drive bolts into threaded hex drive inserts. These are not hurricane or T-nuts. They seem pretty firmly attached - I couldn't pull one straight out, no leverage, with pliers on an inserted bolt. But they are flush on the inside and do not provide a wide flange for additional resistance. A couple questions:

- Was this the normal production method for '88ish or was this a mod done afterward?

- Will the effectiveness of this method approach that of the rings?

    They are terrible! when very firmly tightened they can deform the baffle are surrounding them. I pulled mine out and replaced with hurricane nuts. Though I haven't used them personally, I like the idea of the rings best.
    If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of Progress?!

    Thanks Mr. B. I'm gonna do the rings, but will wait until I refinish/replace the wood and update the crossovers in the winter. I have a very good seal until then.
