Work recently gave me an iPhone 4s to use. I loaded it with some mp3s (256 Kbps) and connected it to my stereo via the iphone connector to RCA out. I was very disappointed in the lack of dimension of the music compared to the original Redbook CD's. I wasn't sure if this is due to the DAC in the iPhone or the media format or, more likely, both.

Buy a LOD to RCA cable. That will help a bit as it takes the iPhone's amp out of the mix. I plan on buying one here myself shortly along with a better integrated vintage stereo for work and some headphones.

Here is one example of the cable, and here is another. There aren't a bunch out there yet.

Yeah, I am using a LOD to RCA (couldn't think of the word at the time). Still sounds lifeless and a bit grainy.

LOL.. dont tell me that! Did it at least sound better than a 3.5mm to headphone plug? LOL I hope so otherwise my 75 bucks will be a bit wasted. All my music is downconverted from AIFF to 256.

Well as I am using headphones that might not matter as much... hopefully....

Of course it sounds like crap. Using an iPhone DAC with MP3 files is double suck-a-tude. Use Apple Lossless files and buy a Wadia 171 iPod/iPhone dock that will extract the digital files off the device, and send it to a high quality external DAC.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

The 170 only accepts iPods. No iPhones or iPads.

    I think that's what I'm looking for!

Hard to justify the cost, for my listening habits, however.

But glad to know it's out there!
