I have been house/job hunting and was all gung-ho on eastern Tennessee, but that has sort of fell through, atleast for now. I am now leaning towards western NC. I have been to Asheville , 6 years ago and loved the area...atleast the scenery. What are some good areas near there to reside? I am looking for an area that isn't a tourist trap or full of the new generation of hippies that call themselves "artists". Ideally, not too awful far out of society, but close enough to everyday type needs. My criteria is a nice, somewhat level 1+ acre ranch w/ a basement and not in a sprawling cookie cutter neighborhood. Is there such a place anymore?

LOL.... you just described most of the areas in Western NC.

PM codyc1ark he should be able to help:smile:.

P.S. Hendersonville NC isnt that bad from my many visits there. The Maggie Valley area is also "OK" but it starts to get touristy there as well...

    :)

Asheville would be a great place to settle, lots of goings on, lots of live music that comes through that area. If you wan't something more rural, Hendersonville is right on the money, or even Boone, Jefferson/West Jefferson. Good luck, let me know if I can help you out at all!

I concur, however you will find "Hippies" in just about all those places lol. Western NC is big into organic and all the things that sometimes come with that. It wouldnt worry me, as crazy is just about everywhere.

Now if your in Boone, NC watch out for that Eustice Conway fella on Turtle Island (see Mountain Men on History channel), he will straight up go hillbilly on you .

I live in north GA, not far from the border with western NC. The north GA mountain area is pretty much the same as western NC/eastern TN, so I would check that out also. Some towns in western NC that I would look at would be Franklin, Murphy, Dillsborough, Waynesville, Robbinsville, Banner Elk, really any of the medium sized towns in western NC would fit the bill. Towns in north GA I would look at would be Hiawassee, Blairsville, Young Harris, Clayton, Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Chatsworth, and Dahlonega. I love this area of the country. My soul is truly at rest when I'm back home in the southern Appalachians.

Having grown up in Asheville, still having friends there, and still visiting back home on a regular basis, I would suggest also looking for a place that's not full of damned yankees overpopulating our beloved mountains.

Dawgfish, I wonder if you've been to the annual News Years Eve Possum Drop in Brasstown, NC:

I have not been to that. Unfortunately it seems like I'm never around home during New Years. I'm going to have to check that out though as that it is quite amusing and goes along with the general quirkiness that is one of the great things of Southern Appalachia. I go through Brasstown all the time when I'm back home heading to some of my favorite creeks and rivers. Thanks for the heads up!

It really depends on what you're looking for, budget, and the drive time to Asheville you want.
I might suggest checking out Leicester, Waynesville, Arden, Fletcher, Mills River. Each has pro's and con's.
Myself, I've lived outside of Brevard for 18 years.
As for your job-hunting; it depends on your field, but a common saying around here is "bring your job with you."
Generally speaking, the tri-cities area of TN and the Greenville/Spartanburg SC area offer more employment opportunities.
I'd be glad to talk to you more off-line if you want.

I live in Johnson City in the Tri-Cities area of TN and am sorry the EAST TN opportunity did not work out. Maybe you can create a different opportunity here as the job market is better than most of the state, depending on the type of work you do. Feel free to PM with any ?'s and would be happy to help in any way possible.

I have lived there a time or two, and it seems every time Im there, I would do anything to get back out. For a vacation, sure its a pretty place. To live, not for me.

But if I had to suggest an area, I would say Brevard. Its close enough to Asheville to still be by a city, but far enough that you have some space. Good luck.

There are two good things there though, Deals Gap (129) and 28 North. If you spend anytime on two wheels, these roads are heaven. Really havent seen a state take care of their roads like NC does. Great place to ride.

LOL, that farm is a bit more than I want to take care of. I forgot to mention that I love to fish, but not a big trout angler anymore. Crappy fishing is more to my liking these days. Lake Lure area looks okay, but I think it is a bunch of BS to have to pay yearly fees to fish there. my max budget is 180K...preferably less

The man has a point. WJ is a very cool place. New River is great, that's why I float it for three days every year!

Musky, since you ruled out eastern TN, I am guessing you were looking at Knoxville and Chattanooga. Did you try something a little farther south of Chattanooga like Dalton, GA?

I found a few interesting homes. One is in Travelers Rest, SC(near the NC border) and the other is in Forest City, NC. Decent areas?

I'd say spend a few days in each.
Travelers Rest is growing faster, Forest City to me still has more of a small town feel to it.
I worked with a guy in Hendersonville who moved to Travelers Rest. He loved it, citing the lower SC gas prices and taxes. He also started home schooling his kids, said the public schools weren't as good.
