Hey all, grabbed a few items at the auction this weekend. I came out alright for doing a write in bid, just be aware when you do that, they usually run you up a bit. Gotta know their tricks! Came out with two TT's, Pioneer PL-A35 and a 516. Now I should have paid more attention to the A35, see photo of plug in. Oops. Also came out with a Pio SX-535, I haven't had a change to plug it up yet, so we'll see what it does after I clean it and then fire it up. Lastly was some JVC AVR, I didn't mean to buy that either, but they sold it as a lot. Scored a box of records as well. All in all, good auction (that I didn't have to sit through!)

PICS!

220V/50 Hz (UK) plug... kind of unfortunate, since the PL-A35, to my mind, is the 'better' of those two turntables. The voltage is easily dealt with with a step-down transformer... but, if the PL-A35 has an AC synchronous motor (I don't know so I won't speculate) I don't think it'll be happy at 60 Hz AC. EDIT: D'oh... what do I know!? Looks like Pioneer spec'd it for both voltages and both line frequencies: http://www.kallhovde.com/pioneer/pl-a35-om.pdf The easiest thing to do is just to change the plug, adjust the input line voltage, and set it up for 60 Hz operation (all described in the manual) and you're all set!

The PL-516 is OK but plastic-y. How are the feet on the 516? They tend to be deteriorated at this late date.

FYI (in case you didn't know), tons of Pioneer literature scans at http://www.kallhovde.com/Njord%20Noatun%27s%20Vintage%20Audio%20Resources.html

Don't know much about Pio TTs, have to go with Mark, there. But I am familiar with that series of Pioneer receiver, and although that is a lower powered unit, the X3X series are pretty "sweet" sounding. I have an SX-838 that had some work done on its pre-amp section, powering a set of EPI 100Vs and hooked up to a lowly Realistic LAB 395 with the original RS47 shure cartridge. Really not bad at all, considering. Have a replacement needle on the way!

Great haul, BTW. I also like some of those later JVCs!

Indeed, it's a nice little basic receiver; very attractive and well made.

Hmm.. I opened up, no visible damage, one fuse is toast. It seems to be on the output section. Scratchy noise when selected through fm, but only thought right a speaker. Humph. Anyway, I'll get a new fuse this week, and give it another go.

May also just need a "truckload" of DeoxIt?
