I was flying out to San Diego for the week on Sunday when all flights into SoCal were cancelled. I got in my car and drove out to SD only to find out that the freeways were closed. (I hadn't watched the news all weekend so knew absolutely nothing about what the fires had done out here).
I got stuck on the 8 just outside Alpine for about 8 hours before they let us through to SD at 1:45am. When I got into Alpine, the sight was INCREDIBLE. I would guess the fireline I saw on the crest of the mountain was at LEAST 8-10 solid miles. The spot fires were everywhere from where the fire jumped the freeway. Still pictures, and even those on the news don't come even CLOSE to the magnititude of what you see of these fires in person.
I can't think of a movie specifically with this scene, but it was something like driving right through hell, with fire everywhere, the darkness of the homes, and all of the spot fires lining the freeway down into SD. Monday was IMO the worst day in that the whole area smelled like a damp fireplace. Past that it's been smokey, but not nearly as bad of a smell goin on.
Good luck to those that live out here and have to deal with evacuations and those types of issues.comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
Several people I work with are at their homes right now evacuating. This is getting very depressing. The amount of smoke and ash in the air has been unbelievable. Finally, due to the wind change there is blue sky outside, first time I've seen in since last Firday.
Peace Out~:DIf...
