Question for all...

Finally slowing down at work so now I have plenty of time to post and ask questions. I keep seeing all these members posting these frequency responce graphs. Where would I get the software/hardware to run one of these in my H/T room.

I'm moving up in the world very shortly in that regard.

I will be upgrading to a pro grade mic, calibrated against a known reference, a pro grade phantom power source, and an RTA software program that corrects for sound card error and also accepts the mic correction factors. And it will all be referenced to 0 dBU with a digital volt meter.

After I'm done, I'll have a rig that will be +/- 1 dB from 10-46,000 Hz. I'll be able to measure FR and THD both in-room and ground plane outside.

Dr. Spec will go berserk on subwoofer measurements after that! If you think I'm bad now............

If you still want to plot FR manually (I've been doing it for a few years), I can give you the website for the test tones, the Excel spreadsheet, and the correction factors for the RS meter and have at it.

That would be great Doc. I guess the next question is... is it complicated to do.

No, just time consuming. The hard part (spreadsheet) is done. Just burn the tones to a disc, set up your meter, record the SPL at each frequency, input the data into the spreadsheet, and voila - an FR graph magically appears.

You can even save it as a jpg and post it for all to see, as I have done many times here in the past.

Hey Doc, just curious why you would buy all this equipment. Are you planning on doing independent equipment reviews in the future or just as a hobby?

Also, I would like to know how to graph the freq. response so I can see what my new Tempest can really do.

Primarily a hobby, but we'll see where it goes. I had such a phenom response to my PB2+ review over at HTF that it kind of sparked my interest in stepping up the measurement end quite a bit. I'd like to do some shootouts between different sub brands and I want the data to be accurate and repeatable.

Anyway, here is the link to the test tones and the RS meter correction factors. And if you want the Excel spreadsheet, just email me, and I'll send it back. You will have to delete the B&K correction factors, and insert the RS CFs and that's about it.

    Thanks for the links Ed.
Also are you going to redo the PB2+ review with the new more accurate equipment?

    Thanks,
    Graham

I'm thinking of getting TrueRTA with a calibrated Mic ... the spreadsheet is just time consuming

Anyone heard good things about TrueRTA?

No, but I will re run all the sweeps to see how they stack up against the old method.

Rotary - I'll be using True RTA Level 4. I'll let you know how I like it.

yes please let me know which setup you planning to get. I don't want to drop a few hundred to get the mic/preamp/calibration, and only to be disappointed :)

    Please post review if possible!

Sweet, sweet Jesus Christ. You know, Doc, some of us wouldn't mind feeling as though we had some brains too, and are in some way measurably significant in this World of ours. ;>} You smart guys with your damnable math; oh, if only I had the chance to dominate you in a mashed potatoes and gravy eating contest ... you'd soon know what humiliation feels like!

I'm just riding on the esteemed coat tails of those before me.

And don't think Dr. Spec can't pack it away or throw down the jam. I'm a regular guy too! I like fast cars, big trucks, gnarly motorcycles, porno, powerful guns, hunting, ATVs, big ****, overeating, beer, bourbon, single malt scotch, and of course daily jam sessions with the little lady. Yeah......that about covers it.
