Carver 1.5t newbie question

Alright, so I was looking around an auction and saw this amp. I don't know a lot about amps, so I have some questions...
What is a good price for this amp? Understanding it's from an auction and I have no clue if it works or not. This is a fairly reputable auction house however.
My current set up is the Onkyo 805 with RTi8s, a CSI5 and I'm losing my mind, but can't remember the name of the backs.
I know this is only a 2 channel amp, so I'm hoping that helps. Would anyone even recommend this or is it not even worth the risk?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

good amp, make sure its common ground if your running sda'sHello Kitty am/fm CD player

I would be using it on the above set...would you only recommend it with SDAs. Like I said, I've never had an amp and not sure what I need to look for...
-
It is a good amp BUT it will be needing work in the future. At close to 30yrs old they need to be recapped and have other work to make them perform at their best. you're looking at about 300/350 for that work so keep that in mind.

Whatever your wallet feels comfortable with considering you might get a totally dead unit that will cost ~300 to repair. You might also get a working unit requiring no work.....

Very good sounding amp. plenty of power.engtaz
I love how music can brighten up a bad day. -
I think you can do a search on ebay that will list the history of the prices brought by that model amp. Carvers really seem to hold their value far more than some other brands of vintage SS amps/pre's do. (IMO)

Alright, thanks for all the feedback. I'll take a stab. Hopefully no one knows what it is and goes cheap. This auction is not normally known for their electronics. So if I buy this thing is there a way to test it. Will it hurt my speakers at all?
-
Does your Onkyo 805 have pre-outs? If not you will need a preamp.>

Sorry guys but I'm going to have to go against the grain on this amp. I owned one and we put it in a shoot out against other amps. Granted a couple of the amps were much more expensive but an Adcom 555 was much better in every way. Yes,the Carver was functioning properly. There were about eight of us there at the time and we all agreed. I couldn't get home to put it up for sale fast enough.

Duly noted, many ears disagree with yours however.
To me a 555 sounds like glass being ground up when it's powering some revealing speakers. -
Yes, the 805 has preouts.

Having just purchased, but having not yet hooked up, a 555-ii, please tell me it won't sound like glass being ground up...

I haven't ever heard a 2 series 555, and, I kid around about the glass thing. I just prefer a smoother tube-like sound that the Carvers are noted for. Too much crispy high frequency irritates my ears, a lot. Certain speakers matched with an old series 555 have been unlistenable for me for more than the length of two or three songs. I'm sure your setup will sound great for you !

I'll let you guys know how it's goes tomorrow. Sometimes you have people at this place that know everything about this stuff, and sometimes you have people who don't have a clue.
There's also a bose system there that will probably bring 500 bucks...lol
Hoping it gets to 5 bucks! (I'll obviously go higher if necessary)
We will see. -
Went for a bit more than I wanted. Oh well, thanks for all the help.
-
I would pass on the carver. the aforementioned 555 would be my choice. Carver fans often think they're bright or bass shy, but they are just super neutral, and Carver amps are anything but. Carver amps are way oo rubbery for me, but some people like that, obviously.design is where science and art break even.

I'm not sure if the clueless quote was directed at me or not but I have owned and heard a boat load of amps with many different speakers and IC's,cables, etc. so I have a slight clue. I was giving you my opinion. Maybe you already decided the Carver was for you,and that's great. I'm not going to say anyone is clueless because of what piece of gear they like.
I can tell you that I've heard two Carver amps and both left me wanting. YMMV. But, IMHO I would go with the Adcom. I have had an Adcom and the Carver hooked up to Rti8's and I felt that the Adcom was better. -
Easy daboyz. You're reading that completely wrong. The clueless comment was in regards to the auction. Which is why I said I'll let everyone here know how it goes. Sometimes there are people there that know exactly what everything is and some people who have no clue.
Sorry you misunderstood. No harm intended. I appreciated all the help here on this forum. -
