Now that the kids can download their favorite songs for under a buck, why buy the album?
So take 100 albums, download the one you want for under $100, instead of $1500 for a bunch of CD's by
1 hit wonders. Or listen over the internet to custom stations.
This is the way it is. Wait till they a la carte CATV. You'll see a lot of providers evaporate.

In the linked article, one of the commenters remarked:

"Plus, the article doesn?t mention that most record labels who offer vinyl include digital download coupons with the album which helps keep the format popular in the digital age."

Is that a correct statement ? Never heard of albums including digital download coupons.

I'd imagine it's people from sites like this that are propping up the physical record industry of CD's and vinyl, though I'm suprised digital sales only surpassed physical media this year.

The whole trend has been around since iTunes opened up shop, and I remember even before that all the hoopla over sites like Napster and limewire. The whole debacle had me scratching my head with record companies spending a good amount of time and willpower chasing retribution against piracy. Meanwhile people with business and computer savvy recognized it as an opportunity to create a new space for making money on the digital music level and some have even managed to do it legally...some by selling songs (a la iTunes), some by selling ad space with free music (a la Pandora).

I'm not at all a music-piracy apologist, I just feel that record labels missed out on building this infrastructure in their own way by wasting time and resources chasing the ever-moving and resourceful target of music stealing.
