ive got an mtx 6500 d and was wondering how this amp rates as far as personal opinion with everybody here. anyways, i was wondering if there is a way to figure out how much power my amplifier is putting out while installed in my car, is this possible with a digital multimeter?

    lotsa power, not very clean. that's my take on it

    Personal opinion? It's not great compared the the 500d it replaced, but will give you a solid 500-600 watts of bump. I agree with MTX that it's not the cleanest.

    is it possible to calculate the output (in watts)of an amplifier using a digital multimeter? if so how do i do this?

    the 500D was a sweet amp -- by far, the best "small amp" i've ever owned.

    far as the 6500D - not as good as the 500D, but still good.

    500D was puttin up 800+ watts x 1 at 2 ohms... 6500D is about 650 x 1 at 2 ohms.

    anyway -- yes u can test it.

    here's how.

    take a digital multimeter, set it to "AC VOLTAGE" and put the red probe on the 6500D's speaker output, the black on the negative output... LEAVE THE SPEKAERS HOOKED UP TOO!

    play a song, as loud as youll play it before u start to wory about breaking **** - and look at the voltage.

    square the voltage (the highest one it puts out, i'tll fluctuate), divide by the resistance (ohms of your subs) that's a ballpark wattage.


    then throw a sine wave cd in there at 60, then 80 hertz... play those --- juice it... see what it puts out before u get distortion..

    square, divide by reistance, that's your peak voltage.

    multiply that by 0.707 and it should be close to the first power u got with the song -- that's your RMS.

    these are like give or take 10 or so percent, its not dead on -- you'd need an oscilloscope, but they're good enough.

    I have just replaced my MTX 1500DX with the 6500D. The 6500 is not as clean but the output is close to the same. With the 1500, it was putting out about 825w and the 6500 is putting out about 715-750 on average. Not a bad amp for the price though.

    1500... u mean 500...

    the 1501D is the replacement for the 81000D - both of which do about 1,400 - 1,500 watts.

    No, I meant the 1500 DX. This was a 1998 model. It is the same as the current 6500D. The cosmetics are different.

    i'd like to see a picture of it...

    the only amps preceeding the thunder class D's were the blue thunders... but they were no blue thunder class D's -- the only exception being the 5 channel blue thunder which had 4 channels of AB power and 1 dedicated sub channel of class D tech.

    however mtx's website is not quite nearly as thorough as it should be. they post all the blue thunder pro stuff but absolutely nothing on the straight old school blue thunder (with the blue casings to boot).

    however to the best of my knowledge the "big" mtx amps of mid to late 90's lore were things like the 2300X that put out about 750 or so x 1 bridged into 4 ohms. big two channels.

    Sorry, it is actually a 2000 model. I'd forgotten when I had bought it. Here is a link with specs and a picture.http://www.carsound.com/reviews/amps/1500dx.html

    The specs on this link say 536 wats at 14v. I remember on the back of the amp, it said 775. I am originally from Buffalo also. I don't miss the winters there. I do miss the pizza and wings though. Not to mention Mighty Taco!

    oh god, its one of those bloody friggin black and gold deals...

    they made like 6 or 7 of those amps (differing setups in the black and gold casings)... most were absolutely obscure and harder to find and keep track of than South American dung beetles. however they were all of pretty much top quality for mtx.

    my apologies for doubting ya on this one...

    hey mighty taco kicks all kinds of ****; makes taco bell look like ****. taco bell actually got "kicked out" of the Univ. @ Buffalo student union caffeteria -- something about "health violations"... so they renamed it "Taco BULL" -- all they did was change the E to a U in the sign too -- very poorly done...lol.
