Hello . My name is Johnny, and I just picked up a set of these towers and am having problems hooking them up. I am using an Onkyo surround sound amp and here's how I hooked them up. I used a spiltter out of the amp (where the sub wolfer plugs into) and on one side I am runing my Yamaha sub, and on the other end of the splitter I ran one cable to the right speaker into the in slot. I then ran another cable into the out slot on the right tower and into the in slot. Problem I am having is that there is a buzz, or a hum (if you will) and I can't seem to get rid of it unless I turn off the built in subs?? What am I doing wrong, or did I buy a defected set here?? The set looks like new and the speakers (when I turn off the subs) still sound great, better than the Yamaha NS-555"s I was using...by a mile, but I'd like to enjoy this set the way it was meant to enjoy. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello Johnny,
Welcome to Polk's forum. Let's figure out if you have a speaker problem or a configuration problem. As a test, one-at-a-time take each speaker, with nothing else playing and remove the sub-cable that you have coming into it, replace the gold plated jumper bars and see how just that one speaker sounds. The internal woofer will function with just a simple speaker level input providing the binding post jumper plates are linking the upper and lower set of binding posts. If you don't have the jumpers use short pieces of speaker wire.
    Regards, Ken

Thanks Ken, I will try that now. I also have a better splitter (I think it's better) that I will install to the back on the amp. One at a time..here goes.

Okay, I may on to something here?? I did as Ken said, and the speakers work perfect. I took the plug out of the Yamaha (shutting it down) and ran that cord into the tower's in and whamo.....instant great sound!! Kind of hope I can still somehow get the Yamaha sub woked into the picture as well, but if not I can live with just the thump that is coming from these beautiful towers. Any ideas on the Yamaha sub, besides selling it with the Yamaha NS-555's I just replaced with the Polks. Man I love these babies!!

I'm glad you're figuring it out. Keep in mind you could simply run the Polks with the speaker level inputs, not bother with line level connections. Then use the Yamaha as the subwoofer providing support for the RT2000P. Not only will this prevent noise, but could actually be the better sounding method.

The towers are booming right now....LOVE this tone Ken. and can't imagine this Yamaha sub in place of the boom that coming out of the RT2000i's!! Is there anyway to run the Yamaha sub any other way without causing problems?? If not, I am still so happy with this sound. And thanks for staying with me here. I am not good with electronics.......even messed up with the kind of amp I have..it's a Sony not an Onkyo!! That's an old school drummer for ya!!

    No problem, Johnny,
Most of the time humming in a powered subwoofer is caused by an insufficient ground connection between the receiver sending the signal and the bass amps. One of the main problems can be the "Y" cables. You might want to try using a different "Y", try and find a good quality one from Monster Cable. They used to make a solid machined metal connector rather than the one using flexible cable. I can take a photo of one if you need it.
    Cheers, Ken

If you have Left / Right pre-outs on your Onkyo, use those for the tower subs and use the separate Sub/LFE output for your yamaha.

Ive had RT2000i towers for years now. I have always had them hooked up with the jumper bridge for the subwoofers. Recently I bought a modern receiver (Onkyo HT-RC360) and I am feeling like I am not maximizing the surround sound by not having the tower subs separated from the front speakers (i assume this is speaker level input). I want to try to run them using RCA jacks (i assume that is line level input). My questions is that I have two towers therefore 4 powered subs (2 in each tower) how do i get the receiver to output to both of them? My receiver has 1 subwoofer out and 1 pre-out.

if you have a dedicated LFE do this. Get the most out of your system and use the subs in the towers for L&R subs cross your LFE down lower for more impact. I have my LFE crossed over at 63hz so it really only kicks in when it absolutely needs too.

I tested mine splitting the sub out on my receiver and they had more punch in the base but I found better balance running them as large with just the speaker connection.
