sub selection help
I need a sub to go with my HT system. Have read up on different ones but still don't know what to get.
System right now:
Reciever - HK AVR225
Front- R50's
Center - Csi 30
Rear - RTi38's
TV - Toshiba 32" flat screen
DVD - SD-3900
Room size: 18 x 12 (est) can't find tape measure.
I want a good sub but don't want to spend $500 on it.
What options do i have?
And where can i get them?

For your room size and budget, just pick one you like. Velodyne, for instance. Or save another $100 and get an SVS. That way you'll be less likely to succomb to buyer's remorse.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

I have a flawless Polk PSW350 that I will soon be putting on Ebay. Let me know if you're interested.

Have you considered a DIY sub or sub kit? The dayton subs from parts express are pretty cheap. For 400 you could also get an adire rava.Graham

Thanks for the offer duffman but i don't want to buy a used sub off someone. Its probally in really good shape, but i just don't want to take a chance with something that has been used. Learnded that lesson when i bought a 6 disk changer. It didn't work luckly i was able to take it back and get a new one. Didn't know the BB guy sold me a used one.
I was looking a t SVS. But if i got one i don't weither to get a passive or powered one. I know i will need to get an amp but don't really know if it is worth the money to buy a passive set up and amp or to just buy the powered one that has it built in.
Don't really want a sub kit cause i don't have anything to put it together with. Would rather buy it already made. I'll look at the Rava.
Thanks for the opinion so far. If u have any more ideas let me know.System:

Get a powered sub. IMHO. I demo'd a Velodyne CHT-10 in home, and I must say, was quite impressed with the rumbling I received from it. It had very tight bass, and could shake the whole room, and my room size is larger than the one you mentioned. CC sells it for 399.99. For a couple hundred more you could get an SVS, but if you are budgeted, the Velo is a good buy.

I also agree that powered is better unless you already have a good amp. If you are considering the Rava, look for Mike Knapp's review. It may be on Adire's website but if not it is on the home theater talk website. I believe it was also reviewed by home theater hi fi.Graham

Now I understand where your coming from. Stick to your budget. Its always nice when guys say save even more for something. BUT sometimes(and this may not be your case) you really cant spend more like me I had a strict budget and saving another $100 would mean getting a sub NEXT October. So for the money id look at the Atlantic Technology T70 Subwoofer its a 10" acoustic suspension set up and was $179 shipped to my door list is normaly $400 but they are blowing these out the door cause the .1 are out now. Check out Velodyne also and even the CSW Basscube or Newton series. Also check out ebay as I missed a NHT sub there that sold for $189 that was a $500 sub the other day before I got my AT sub. CSW sells on eaby as hifi.com(or somehting like that). The Rava is also another great sub in your range I almost got that but when I saw $179 for the AT sub I just did it for the price(plus they had free shippping).

You can get an Infinity IL120s in the $300 range. Probably can't be beat for that money. Very, very tight and musical sub when it's set up with it's RABOS (Room adaptive bass optimization system).
In a nutshell, each and every single room without exeption has a low frequency bump or spike at any and every point in the room where you could place the sub (it can also be different at different spots). This sytem with a test tone CD and a chart identifies exactly where the bump is on the frequency chart, and
lets you equalize it to compensate for it. It really works too. When you disengage the rabos sytem, bass is noticeably looser and more "sloppy". Reengage it, and it tightens back up signifigantly. I'm sure DS could probably explain this better than me as that his his special area of expertise, if he wants to take a stab at it.
Plus that sub has a high tech eccentric driver as well. -

The self promotion of a for sale item at another site is seriously frowned at here. In fact, your post could be taken as a way to skirt the FM rules.
Jesse, I read that as he has one but he's referencing the exact same model on amazon for the OP....?TNRabbit
