Hi Guys,
I couldn't stay home w/ the heat wave happening so I took a drive to a small high end audio store up in Verona N.J.
I auditioned a new pair of Vandersteen 5s which were amazing and very expensive and then we went to what I've been looking for. These were Vandersteen 2ce played through a solid state amp and I have to say this was a very enjoyable experience. The store had all sorts of Cary tube amps and Rotel and a bit of everything. What the guy basically said that w/ my gear he also agreed that the speakers were a weak link but a dac would improve the sound of my Denon cd player. So after all is said and done for used walnut tops, perfect socks and boxed he wanted $1200 and change. Those vaunted SDAs are very hard to find and even harder to get a listen to so besides the Ohm/Walsh 2s I yapped about these might be the ones.He was not a fan of the omni directional system and both would work in footprint and gear compatibility.Anyone like these Vandersteen and why...

I have a set of 2c's that I will keep for a long long time. I really like them and once I bi-amped and bi-wired them they really came alive. The 2ce's are considered much better by most and are a real good deal at $1200.
I agree on the DAC and might have an extra one if you want to try one out. -
Vandersteens seem to be a "get off the merry-go-round" speaker for many people. That says a lot.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

This idea of the Dac taking the noise out of an entry level Denon cdp really intrigues me. His was a Cary and fairly big and w/ some heft to it .There was another brand the name escapes me but it was much smaller and had these rubber discs on top I guess for stacking protection and an LED window. So $1200 is a good price for these, I mean these were pristine as far as I could tell. The ones we listened to were piano black and were bi wired and I definately prefered the walnut. How does "try 1 out" and judging from my sig my stack is 4 miles high do I really need another device besides better speakers.2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

You don't need more speaker you need to thin out your stuff. Sell the Infinty's, and the Bose 601's and get the Vandersteen's. It's like a 2 for 1 sale then. Trust me your ears will thanks you. Stop trying to rebuild the Greatful Dead wall of sound and get good speakers. Honestly, those Vandersteen's put all your other speakers to shame.
A DAC would be a nice addition along with the Vandersteen but get the speakers first. DAC's are always available those speakers at that price will not be. -
Joe ,the Infinitys are a given that they will be gone .The Bose on the other hand ,well I resuurected them from blown surrounds, sun bleached cabinets and torn grill covers to a decent looking pair of good and not great speakers. So yes I really liked the Vandersteens and getting maybe $100 for the Infinitys will be pushing it so a saving I must go.I really do understand but everything I have does work well looks good and is neat and orderly ,I wish I had a camera so I could show you guys,It's not that ridiculous.2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

The problem I would bet is breathing room. You don't want speakers touching or in too close of proximity to each other. They need room to breath and make there best sound.
And as much as you did on the Bose I would still sell them. The Vandersteen's are just that much better.
