Hi all my fellow polkies its been a while since I have participated on the forum. Let me fill you in on whats been happening with me.

At the end of March I got laid off from my job and while the job market sucks down here right now I have decided to see if I can turn my hobby of photography into a career. While it has been slow going I have gotten a few paying gigs including a wedding and have been lucky enough to get some of my prints on exhibit and have sold a few through those exhibits. I have also started doing stock photography as well. I would ask everyone to visit my webpage and give me your thoughts.

I look forward to seeing everyone at Polkfest in October.

Dave

Very nice! Congrats on being able to do something you really want to do!

Where else have you posted your pics online before? The waterfall pics.

Those pics are pretty good! Congrats on turning a passion into a real job. Not often you can do that.

Thanks I am glad that you enjoy them. I have posted some of the pics here and I also post them on Facebook, Flickr and Google+. My next step to start working on is adding a blog section to the website and try to do a daily blog post. I also want to work on a video section and add instructional videos to see how certain effects are done.

    Welcome back Dave!

Nice job on the photos. How did you like doing the weddings? I did 2 weddings and...never again! I hated every moment of them. They were friends who bugged the hell out of me till I said yes. If there's a next time, I stick with NO! I'm curious, you mentioned getting into stock photography. Is there a site you can point me to for info? I've wondered about that.

I've all but dropped studio photography, except for (hold on) a friend who's been bugging me to take shots of her daughter. This I will do since I enjoy the studio stuff. My real love is sports photography. I've been shooting primarily College Gymnastics the last 6 years. I've gotten in tight with a couple of major schools who allow me full access every season to shoot on the floor. I take care of them in return.

Nice to see you back! Keep shootin!
    No excuses!

Thanks man. To tell you the truth I am not sure that I really want to do weddings I was the 2nd shooter and was running around like a mad man trying to get all the perfect shots and then the hours of editing afterwards. The balance is figuring out how much to charge. I am shooting my friends wedding in October and thats for free but I now understand why wedding photographers charge so much. I have done one studio shoot with a model and I really enjoyed it. As far as sports photography I have shot some football games for a local league in the area and really enjoyed it. I do know that I need much faster glass then I currently have. The next game I shoot I am going to rent a 400mm 2.8 and see how it goes.

As far as the stock photography there are 2 sites that I joined are http://www.dreamstime.com/ and http://www.istockphoto.com/ and will see how they go.

Having done a couple of weddings...I would rather flip burgers at MickyDs than do more weddings. By the time you do the pre wedding planning, the shoot (including the rehersal dinner) and all the time spent in post processing chances are you have made less than minimum wage at todays market rates. Your only hope of making some real money is in selling prints or photo books of the wedding images, but you are dealing with "customers" who think you should simply sell them a CD of hi-rez images for a couple hunrded bucks they can take to Wal-mart to print because all you have done is walk around and push a shutter button for a couple of hours. Then there is dealing with the brides and the mothers....

I would try to add that if possible to those images.

Very nice! I also would put a copyright notice on the pics. Make a website with prices for large color prints in frames.

The copyright is there but not on the photo as I am not a fan of watermarks on the photos. All the pics on the site are web size so if you really wanted to steal it you would not be able to do a large print with them without it becoming distorted. This encourages people to click on the buy button and purchase the size they want.

Thanks I shoot with a Nikon D200 which I love. I eventually want to upgrade to a full frame body like the D4 but I have to save 6K for it. In the meantime I am saving up for some really good glass.
