Hey guys I have a set of older S4's
What is the general concensus on these speakers? I have not been able to find out a lot about them as they are older(mid 90's)models. I was not sure how they "rank" among similar Polks of todar or even among other speakers of today. They are in perfect shape not ever used hard and look like new. Just wondering a general oppinion on these speakers.

i will get some and try.Probably be tomorrow though. I think they are most compared to the current RT 25 or 38I's though. 1 6 or 6.5" and a tweeter in a single ported cabinet. Were sold areund 93-96

They sport a 1" silk dome tweeter and 6 ½" woofer.
100 watt power handling.
Freq response 50-23,000 Hz (-3dB).
15 ½" high x 9 ½" wide x 7 ¼" deep.
The were sold as the line just 'under' the original RT series (rt3,5,7 etc). They were also, if I'm not mistaken the LAST Polk speakers to use a passive radiator design (in some models).
I like the drivers, hate the cabs. The cabs are FAR from inert, and keep that plastic front baffle away from heat, even sunlight - it will warp.
My mom has a pair in her 2ch rig, and they fill a large room really well. As far as sound - I'd put them on the slightly warm side of neutral - great for just about any genre of music.

Ive really enjoyed them. Got them to replace some HUGE Infinity Studio Monitor 150's I had that were just way too big for the livingroom of the house(20X12). They seem to as you said really fill the room quite well. They are used as the left and right of a Home Theater system with a Atlantic Technology T70 Subwoofer and 2 cheesy(needing replaced) radioshack surrounds. I was just not really sure how they rated as a older model. I can find tons on info on the newer(current to 3 yrs old)models but not much as far as reviews go on the older stuff. I need to get some better(but inexpensive aka $100 or under)surrounds.

If you dig the sound, build an S-series rig. I've seen some larger models, S8 and S10 going fairly cheap on ebay as of late.
Pretty much ANY Polk silk (black) dome will mate well. Look for early RT towers (8,10,12,400 etc) for the front, or bag a pair of R10,15,20 etc for rear duty.

Thanks for the info, Russ, and the pics, CB.
Funny that such a relatively recent line has no info in the past products library...More later,

The vintage gear information area is lacking some serious support.
Nice pair of speakers C Bennett.
Great information Russman.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
They're great speakers. My neighbor owns a pair hooked up to a Yamaha receiver. The S4 is the first Polk speakers I heard and that's how I got into Polk. They have very good imaging and smooth highs.

Thanks guys. I had not been able to find much on them. Id tell people that I had S4's and they thought I meant Monitor 4's. Id be like no S4 and they would never have heard of them. I figures some of you guys would know a little more and I was right.

I have a pair of them too C.....just sittin in my closet. Maybe, if there's someone that wants four we could work something out. Its no biggie though....I might just keep mine for when I get a bigger house and put them in the kitchen or somethin.Home Speakers polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired), CSi30, FX3000i, PSW250

I still use my s4's for surround duties. I have a pair of s10's up front.
These are very nice sounding speakers, but you must drive them with clean power to really get thier full potential.
I will soon be retiring these classics for the LSi series. Just waiting on funds for new amp and I will be in like Flynn!"she had the body of Venus, with arms." -
Back before I had a kid(3yrs old)and a Muscle Car(69 RoadRunner) and had money to really spend on stereo stuff. I was driving them with a Carver AVR receiver. That had great power. But I don't have $800 to drop on a receiver anymore and I wanted to upgrade from the old Dolby Pro Logic to Dolby Digital/DTS/DDII etc.. So now on a tight budget I kept the Polk S4's since they are like new and got a Kenwood VR-605 for $89 and a Atlantic Technology T70 Subwoofer for $179. I have a JBL center that is not the best but seems to work ok for now and the set of cheesy RadioShack surrounds(kinda look like bose cubes but a but bigger and swivel and stuff)that work but thats about it. I am thinking of getting another set of S4's(can find them every now and then for around $50) or R15's for surrounds. Id like a CS 200 series(cant remember the exact # though) center too but thats just not in the budget now since getting the new receiver and sub. Oh that sub is a steal at $179 too sounds/works great!

ChrisDurano,
If you want to sell a pair, I'm interested. Let me know.

Yeah..ok. I'm thinking around $50? Not sure how much shipping to Toronto would cost. What do you think?Home Speakers polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired), CSi30, FX3000i, PSW250

Sorry, I don't know how much shipping will cost. I'll try to find out. I'll pay for the shipping though. If you want, I'll send you a money order for the $50 first and then tell me how much shipping was after you send it and I'll send another money order for that.

Sorry..double post

****...I'm so sorry Chris. I just talked to my mom and she almost blew up on me. She doesn't want me to get anymore speakers because she knows I'm still going to get an LSiC and LSi7 when I get back to HT. If she decides to let me buy them I'll get back to you. Sorry dude.

Hey C,
Besides having S4 too, we also have a Road Runner. Both my brother in laws race them 1/4 mile. My in laws are big in to that stuff. MOPAR baby! So, my father in law got a bright yellow Road Runner for my wife....crazy. All original parts too. 7,000 miles on it. When we get the 3 car garage....we'll be bringing it down. Very rare vehicle Chris, outstanding. That car in a way, started this godawful trend of high rear spoilers I think....
Just kidding.
I saw one at a show that was mint on the outside, no ripples, original body panels, no dings, amazing paint job in original color.....and ZEBRA interior.....I couldn't believe it. Yeah I like the car it is nice but man they take way lots of $$$$. I am glad im just about done with it! Takes up a lot of money I could have used for other things. Got some extra cash that comes every October($400 uniform allowance) from work and needed only $72 of it this year so had some left to spend. So I got stereo stuff instead of new tires for the RoadRunner. Here is a pic or in the unlikely event you get Mopar Muscle Magazine you can check it out in there its in the mag in the back in last months one
