So, I'm without a personal pc. I'm going to buy a MacBook, but that's going to have to wait for a bit. I'm not looking for anything great, this will be used for some word processing, Polk, surfing, and eventually a squeezebox server (hence why I want it cheep). I'm not firm on the budget, but would like to keep it under 150. Any ideas?

You might be able to find a desktop but a laptop? I doubt it.

I'm seeing a few here and there. The Dell D430 sticks out at me, there all over that range on ebay, but the really cheep ones need batterys.

Search Buy.com for refurbs. They have cheap laptops for days. Cheapest one I can find:

Contact Cokewithvanilla and see if he still has any for sale. He is always selling cheap laptops here and has good feedback. I had a friend pick up one of his laptops a month ago for about $140 and he couldn't be happier.

Here's another suggestion. Cowboom is owned by BestBuy BTW:

Only other suggestion is to look for a "Netbook" on CL realizing your going to get a 10" screen, slow CPU thats adequate for word processing and web but dont expect to play demanding video games, and a small HDD.
I see Netbooks on CL for ~100 every now and again. Acer comes to mind.
I am hoping to get one for travel use just to check email and play on the forum."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
Dailysteals has a good deal on a surprisingly capable desktop PC ($200):

3.0GHz dual-core Pentium D, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 x64 Home Premium... HDD is kind of small at 40GB.
Tempted to get one just to play around with. Maybe turn into a HTPC, Windows Home Server... who knows.

It's going to be a dog of a computer, but at your price range that's what you're going to end up with, if you insist on getting a laptop instead of a desktop.

But does it meet my needs? Temp use as a web surfing maching, checking email (non outlook), and here in 4 to 6 months being moved to my SQB server? -
Sure, it will get the job done, just slowly. Will need a larger HDD to store your music for the SQB server, however, unless you just have very little music. The free space on the 40GB drive isn't going to hold much.

My plans are to order a 3TB drive when the time comes. That should be plenty for my use. I may continue my search, and try and scrape another $50.00 or so together and find something a bit quicker. I sent my brother who is fairly good friends with a Dell rep (or he was) in SD, I'm going to look down that avenue as well. Thanks for the input.
