I have a CS245i that I added a pair of RT35i's to at suggestions from this board. I have just been using them in the bedroom in a 3.0 setup with a new low powered Pioneer AVR. I might switch back to my older Sony STR-DE845 though.

But I found a deal on a CS400 and a pair of RT55's on CL for $125. Will the CS400 go okay with the 55's as fronts and the 35's as rears if I move to a 5.0 setup? And will 80 or so watts be enough to drive all that. The Sony is around 100 w/c?

The room is fairly large but since it's a bedroom, I don't often get to crank it much. I mostly just use the setup for TV and some music.

It will be fine, not a perfect match but close enough. The RT55's are arguably the best bookshelf speaker from Polk Audio. They alone are more than worth the $125.

Thanks. One of the covers has a tear in it, but other than that, they are supposed to be solid. I am picking them up this evening if all goes right (cuz you never know with CL).

Unsure why it isn't a perfect match? Go get them Jim. For that price you could easily flip them.

I can't afford the kind of equipment everyone on here lists, but I find myself working my way up the Polk ladder, so to speak. I started out with a CS150 center and a pair of old Monitor 2's (or something like that, the ident plates are gone), then I got the CS245i and the RT35i's and now should be getting those I listed above.

Not sure what the next step is, speaker-wise, but I keep reading this board and getting ready. I probably need a serious AVR upgrade before getting anything larger.

Apologies, the CS400 is a perfect match, I thought it was a generation newer.
I still use a pair of RT55's as my main speakers. They are one of my favorites.

Well, I bought them. Haven't even heard them yet but they seem to be in good condition cosmetically except for the hole in the bottom of one cover, that I knew about beforehand. And on the back, I don't even know what it's called but one is missing the rubber that covers the rear port. I have no idea if that matters or not. If it does, is there a site where I can order one?

They are RT55's, not the 55i's and the center is the CS400, not the CS400i. The seller said I was the first to contact him but he could have sold them several times over.

    Congrats

Slowly but surely is the best way to go down this rabbit hole. That's how I've been doing it for 17 years strong now.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Nice grab! and if you decide they aren't your style you should be able to get rid of them without much trouble. I paid $100 just for the cs400. used it both with some rt55s and some rt800s for a while. ironically with a sony str de845. let us know how you feel about them compared to your current set up...of course after I got my RT55s I felt they used the term bookshelf loosely...

Thanks for the comments, guys. I haven't hooked up the center channel yet, but listened to some Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon last night and they definitely fill the room better than the 35s did. I will have to try them out on some other stuff tonight but the bass is better for sure.

They are hooked to a Pioneer VSX 821K which I got a few weeks ago (also off CL $125 nib) but I want to hear them with the old Sony also. Not sure the Sony is enough either, but they will benefit from some more power.

The wife's away till Friday so I just have to practice explaining why it was too good to pass up.
