Have it narrowed down to Onkyo nr3009 ($839) or Pioneer sc55 ($999). Which one?

My new Onkyo 1009 just arrived today and is still in thee box. Could not decide between it and the 3009. I gave serious thought to trying a high-end Pio like the SC55 (just to broaden my horizon) but I could not get over the fact that Pioneer has NO authorized internet resellers for their Elite line.

So be prepared to buy a warranty from a third party if you buy online, or you're rolling the dice.

For me the question was whether the additional power of the 3009 and the XT32 was worth the $500 price difference. Since I doubt I will ever have dual subwoofers (the xt32 can equalize the subwoofers individually), I wasn't convinced that the XT32 would be *that* much better than the XT (which is in the 1009) for me. If you don't have the room for one or more amps, then the power might be worth something. However, I decided that the most I would ever have either model Onkyo drive would be a couple of Lsi7s as rears. So, I'm hoping the 1009 can pull that off as long as I keep volume modest.

    Good luck with your decsion!

When I bought my Pioneer i had it narrowed down to that and the Yamaha RX-2000 which i loved. The difference came down to the price but the Aventage series is definitely worth checking out. I feel the Yamaha was very clear and more musical, and the pioneer had a little more punch for ht and threw a wider soundstage to me.

Take a look at marantz as well. recently bought SR6006 and love what it does with the sound and picture quality. Althouth Pio elite are also very nice ones and higly regarded here, but Marantz are economic alternatives.

I'd be shocked if you don't love it. BTW, some people say that the new Onkyo AVRs do not get as hot as the older ones (you could fry an egg on my SR875). Since my 1009 is still not hooked up I cannot comment yet. However, either way you should be sure to give your avr a lot of breathing room. I removed the back cover of my entertainment stand, but others folks have connected fans just to be safe. One person on another forum said they use the usb port to run a fan. Don't want to make you paranoid, but you don't to be one of those people who give it only 1-2 inch of headroom and then wonder why it overheats.

@NewHTguy - $839 for Onkyo nr3009 is a great deal. Can you share ton where did you find it?
I currently have 809 and it doesn't ever get hot. They must have improved it in the current line. I can see through case and it has very large radiators as well as 2 built in fans. I have had 607 before and it was really hard to keep it cool.

The original poster, mara, is the one who found it, not me. The best price I've seen for a new NR3009 is $1319. If I had found that price I would have bought the NR3009 instead of the NR1009. Not sure if that was new or a refurb.

Yes, my mistake. I meat mara. $1300 is the lowest I can google. $839 sounds like a steal. I have noticed Onkyo just released XX10 series maybe that's why some stores try to clear their shelfs. I was looking at the pictures for the new models and I don't see the the RCA 7.1 inputs, which is weird. I am guessing they want customers to use hdmi only.

If weight has any bearing (which it does for me) the Onkyo 3009 weighs 55lbs!! While the Pioneer sc55 comes in 38lbs.

Excellant buy on the Onkyo! Enjoy !
