Is the Oppo 93 worth $350. more, than say a Panasonic which retails for about $150? Is picture quality that much better? Why the huge price difference?

I doubt it. It's pretty hard to find a "bad" bluray player. If you're super-picky, get the oppo--or if it's superior audio section interest you, but there again, the improvement will be minimal. I've been running a Panasonic (and have owned an Oppo) BD30 for years now, hasn't let me down yet.

Well, for the same reasons receivers vary in price. More bells and whistles, better parts used, possibly better audio too. Look at what each piece offers and decide for yourself whats most important to you.

Right on Tony, it's a "fussyness" thing. The Oppo is great, no doubt about it---but are the subtleties worth the money? Don't we all wish we had that crystal ball?

To me the only reason I would get it is if I had a pretty killer dual-purpose rig and planned on spinning a lot of SACD and DVD audio discs, which none of the cheaper BDPs can play (except some sonys - mine can do SACD but I rarely utilize that function since going all in-ceiling ).

Exactly, I doubt there will be any "practical" video performance difference.

you are posting in audio forums....i got OPPO so I don't have to upgrade AVR to benefit lossess audio....I am using it to use analog outputs from OPPO to 5.1 direct input on HK AVR...

my son watches Disney movie pretty much everyday....

After 9 months of research I just purchased the Oppo BDP 93 today. Because of a) Build Quality, B) plays everything, C) you can hook and eSATA Drive and make a home brewed media server, C) Streams everything, D) Networks, E) I have not read a single bad review anywhere, F) I want really good 2 channel audio as well as surround.

So, it seems this unit does all that! Now I just need the right AVR to compliment it!

    This.

I recently picked up an Oppo and wish I had done it sooner. but I listen to CD's, SACD's, multi-channel music, and of course watch movies via a PJ. So, depends on your application.

That's where the Oppo's niche is---the guy who is super fussy and/or wants to take advantage of the flexibility of the oppo; no doubt. I'm gonna pick one up myself because it will also be used as a transport when (if) my panny dies.
