Onscreen display? (Denon)

I have to assume that this is a dumb question, but, must one have a direct (not through VCR) connection running from the receiver (Denon 2802) to the television in order to access the onscreen set-up menu?
Heavens to Murgatroid, it's never easy for me.

I see no reason you couldn't run the video for the on-screen display through a VCR. Just set the VCR to monitor the input that you connect it to (A/V in, Line In 1, 2...whatever) and it should pass it on to your TV.
I have a Denon 3801, I just tried it, and it will work that way.

Specifically, what port to what port needs to be connected? I am currently unable to get an onscreen display, it doesn't matter to me if the connection is from the VCR to the receiver, or if it's from the television to the receiver ... I just need to know which ports on the back of which component need connection so I can set-up this system.
I must be missing a connection that communicates the information from the receiver to the television. -
You need to connect the receiver's video or monitor output, to a video input on your TV. If you're having problems, it's probably better to make a direct connection first, instead of going through a VCR, just to make sure everything's working. You may have to use composite video connections. I'm not sure whether the Denon will output the on-screen display in S- or component- video, or not.
After you've got it hooked up, and you've got your TV switched to the appropriate input, you'll have to press a button on your receiver remote to bring up the display. Mine says "OSD", which could be a little confusing since I've also got a button that says "display". Hope that helps.
