House got struck by lightning last night

Had crazy rain storms. An inch of hail too.
Got woken up abruptly around 4:30 AM by a loud snap and a very bright flash followed by a massive boom.
It was very close. Within 50 feet. I think it hit the AC unit outside.
But the house definitely surged. I have the majority of stuff on surge protectors and the primary one on the service box. Half of the secondary ones tripped.
I lost nothing. The Tripp Light unit in the living room did pop it's breaker but that is what it's supposed to do in an overload situation like that. Saved everything there. Whole house surge protector must have soaked up the rest. Still green though but I might have to replace it.
Only casualty, the breaker for the AC. Woke up around 7:30 am to an 85 degree house. Figured out the breaker flipped, flipped it back on and the AC fired right up. Thank God! 95+ degree heat all weekend would have sucked poo nuggets without the AC.
If it wasn't for those surge protectors everywhere, I'd be rather perturbed right now.
So yeah, don't think they work? Think again. Best $130 I ever spent. It saved me anywhere from $2,000 to $20,000 this morning 'cause I would have at least lost the AC compressor and probably the plasma in the living room if not way more if the surge protectors weren't there.

Thank god you had that protection installed, John! I can't imagine the state I'd be in if that strike fried most of your gear because there is some "really" nice stuff there that would be rough to replace!
As for AC, people up here don't believe in it. I constantly hear, "Yah don't need Ai-conditioning downeast, Sih! Neve get that hawt up hea"! Tell me about it. We'll be near 90 tomorrow and it's always a very "humid" 90.
Hope all else stays cool for tomorrow.

It probably didn't hit you direct, but was damn close. Good thing.
I have had three strikes direct to the structures I was in, trust me, you know it. You can smell the ozone.
One time I was zapped in rubber boots and knocked around 12 feet. Rung my gong.
Another time I got bit when dry lightning hit a rod out of the blue. I caught it from ground dissipation for cryin out loud. My hair was ALL frizzed out, looked like an afro... -
Hmmm....... I missed.

We had a bolt throw half of mine last year because it hit the pole outside my living window. Fortunately, I unplugged everything prior. Glad to hear everything is a-ok!Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!! -

glad your gear is safe.
Storms hit my area hard last night, too. Most people still don't have power.. luckily I do.
I was driving around last night, and there were a ton of fallen branches... I ran most of them oven for fun and ended up busting my radiator. Whoops...:redface:2-Channel: PC > Schiit Eitr > Audio Research DAC-8 > Audio Research LS-26 > Pass Labs X-250.5 > Magnepan 3.7's

Surge protectors are worth their weight in gold. I had a transformer fire a few years ago a block away from home. It fried all my surge protectors. The only other casualties were two alarm clocks that were plugged in to the wall.SRT For Life; SDA Forever!
The SRT SEISMIC System:
Four main satellite speakers, six powered subs, two dedicated for LFE channel, two center speakers for over/under screen placement and three Control Centers. Amaze your friends, terrorize your neighbors, seize the audio bragging rights for your state. Go ahead, buy it; you only go around once. -
We had that big storm through here last night and damage everywhere. We escaped with very minor damage and a lot of the counties around here are without power. We had our power, which was great because it is very hot.
