Onkyo A-7022

Hopefully picking one of these up in the next day or two. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on them?
I found a thread here from back in the day that also has pics of what my unit looks like.
The plan is to use at work for mostly headphones and maybe later on as a pre since it does let you do that. It can drive 4 ohm loads so I was wondering if it might be able to handle a set of LSi 7's or even maybe some SDA's.
I am also planning on taking the vinyl vener cover off and making one from solid wood while I am in WI with my relatives (who are carpenters). Any thoughts on what wood I should use (maple, birch, etc)? I am thinking possibly a dark stain to blend in with the cover. That or going with stark contrast and a lighter wood.
Thoughts?

I'm not familiar with that particular Onkyo, but in some ways the 65 watt x 2 is a kind of sweet spot for a lot of older vintage integrateds. I have a Kenwood KA-7300 and the Sansui AU-517 (both in that power range) and both with dual power supplies. The Sansui is the more powerful amp but they both sound very nice and would have no problem driving my LSi-7s which my NAD C325 (which had less power at 50 watts, did with ease).
I've heard some older Onkyos, not yours, and I liked what I heard! I think you will too. As to SDAs, I'm not sure about that? But you can always give it a try!
Looks like a nice piece!

Nice piece if memory serves - is that one of the bronzed-faced Onkyo amps?
The Onkyo amps tended to be under the radar but quite decent; their component tuners were excellent but not quite as well-kept of a secret ;-)
I still think the Onkyo stuff is very respectable consumer-grade hardware.
check www.audio-heritage.jp for more info. It might be the same as the home-market's "A-722"?

Yes it is, thats kinda why I like it. That and its face looks cleaner since there is no tuner on it....mhardy6647 wrote: »It might be the same as the home-market's "A-722"?

Yes from what I understand it was released in Japan as an Integra A-722 and release here in the US as the Onkyo A-7022 (they didnt start differentiation of the Integra and Onkyo lines in the US till later)"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Nice piece. My vote is for CRS's and that unit.

I was kinda thinking them, or the 1C's in the future as those are kinda the golden ones from what I understand. I wont have any room for the big boys anytime soon.
Anyone have any thoughts on a custom case to replace the cheap vener one? Unit was apparently sold to someone else. Seller stopped responding to either emails from me or phone calls from Leroy. No worries, there will always be the next one"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Its ok, the money for that is now needed to pay the deductible on my car insurance due to the radiator going bad. So it wasnt meant to be.....
Plus I would only be using it for a headphone amp for right now.
There is always another deal out there somewhere. This time it just wasnt the deal meant for me...."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
Dan- I've got several pieces that might work for what you want for now. Give me a call this week and I'll try to find something that would work for you. A couple of them would be cost of shipping plus maybe $25.2-ch System: Parasound P/LD 2000 pre, Parasound HCA-1000 amp, Parasound T/DQ Tuner, Phase Technology PC-100 Tower speakers, Technics SL-1600 Turntable, Denon 2910 SACD/CD player, Peachtree DAC iT and X1asynchorus USB converter, HSU VTF-3 subwoofer.

I might do that. I do still have my Dad's old Yamaha CR-300 at work right now to use for headphones. It works decent just needs some de-oxit. That Onkyo was just too pretty to pass up lol...
PM me your phone number anyway"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
