Welcome to Club Polk!
Here's a common tip. Put the sub in the position you would be sitting when watching a movie. Then crawl around on the floor listening for where the bass is strongest and cleanest. That's the SPOT! the sub should be in!
As far as tweaking run whatever auto set up you have on your AVR--set the sub volume at about 12 o'clock before you start. Once that is set, run through the speakers manually again and (if you have an SPL meter you can check the sub output with it). If not your ears might do if you know enough.
Set the AVR crossover, or rather start out at 80 hz. Use a cable from the sub out to the LFE unfiltered IN on the sub.
Finally, regarding the sub phase switch 0-180. While listening to a bass heavy passage have someone flip that from 0 to 180 to 0 to 180 till you can hear which setting gives the deepest but cleanest bass.
A lot more can be added. But this will get you going!
