We finaly dumped comcast cable after 6 years of frustration:evil:. Last night was the last straw:cry:. Our cable went completley out and customer service refused to even help trouble shoot! They said they would send a service tech out but it would be a $50 fee.
In the heat of the moment we canceled and went with Direct Tv/Centurylink combo. We are getting more channels, 4 hd boxes 1 dvr for $60 less than our current cable bill per month. However i'm nervous about switching to DSl and its speed quality.

To the question of this thread anyone have a DSl modem reccomendation for Century Link DSl and or experinces?

I did the opposite. I got fed up with Earthlink DSL and switched to Comcast cable modem. Next week I will cancel my Comcast TV since I never watch it, but keep the Internet service.

Good luck. No matter who you choose, there will be issues.

They won't give you a free (or free after rebate) DSL Modem? In 12+ years of using DSL (went through ~3-4 modems), I've never had to buy one. They've always given me one. I'm about to dump DSL after all these years. Ditching the home phone line and after that goes, there isn't much reason to keep DSL. The price vs Comcast cable is very close for comparable service.

I never had any luck with the free modems my provider supplied - slow & dropped connections.
Went through several Zoom modems - at the least sign of a storm or other power disruption they all died (always connected through a UPS).
I've been using a Netgear I bought at BB for over a year - no problems.

Is it plug and play or would i have to involve CenturyLink?

I have an Actiontech q1000 that they sell/rent. It's running two eithernet connections and three or four wireless connections, and it's worked just fine for the couple of years I've had it.

BTW, as an employee, I still had to rent or buy my modem.

    Plug and Play.
Both Windows XP and 7 have picked it up well.
Of course you have to go in and select new username/password and choice of encryption for your personal network.

Never had any drops with my Bellsouth/ATT provided DSL modems. The one I have now has been rock solid for more than 4 years. I believe it is a Motorola 2210, prior to that, I had a Westell that I used for many years.

I doubt that they wouldn't provide you a modem.

Usually DSL modems are either a rental on your bill or you can outright buy them or they are free with services. Really depends on who is offering it.

I will say this though, you'll miss the cable internet. I understand your frustration with the TV services as I used to do tech support for Comcast. However I was not in that department but a service charge is unnecessary when a problem is observed. Simple troubleshooting can determine this.

I would have spoken to a supervisor (Not escalations. They will send you there always) and explained it.

Sorry you had a bad experience but the cable is superior.

Why would you state Cable is better? I work on the other end adsl.

I would think cable would be faster. There is no way I could go back to either after having 1gb fiber.

Everyone wants speed now even when a 1 MB/s line is sufficient for browsing. People love bragging about there 250 Mbps download speeds.

ADSL is solid, but has it's limitations.

I have a 2.5 MB/s line that's seen less than 3 hours of downtime in all of 6 years and that's all I need. I also dislike the local ADSL offering.

While I may be biased ( I install fiber fed dsl equipment) I've had both and I'd say it's cable that has it's limitations with the way their shared network is designed.

I'd very much not like to have to go back to cable internet.
