The places I normally hang out didnt really help me out so I stumbled upon this place which looks more promising.

A craigslist listing by me is offering a pair of Polk Audio Studio Monitor 10's and a Pioneer Receiver DSX-412 w/ remote. I tried searching online but much info was impertinent or several years out of date.

What would you guys pay for this? Trying to see if what the seller offered is a good price. Been looking for some not too pricey pieces for a neighbor.

Any input/help is greatly appreciated! Sorry if this is the wrong forum but nothing else seemed appropriate!

    Welcome to Club Polk!

Polk Monitor 10s, around 80-120 depending on condition! The Pioneer, I believe, is an entry level 5.1 channel AVR that may have been less than 200 new and now is unbelievably dated, so 30-40 dollars! It won't do the Monitor 10s justice. You'll need something better eventually!

Question? Are the speaker stands included because that would up the price just a tad! 20-30 for the stands?

    Thanks for the quick response!

I would need to use all of your top prices to come in range of this guy's price. He talks like he thinks they are worth much more so no amount of haggling will be able to beat this guy down to a reasonable range. Craigslist isnt the most reliable so i use it to find a good deal, not get items at par for what they are worth!

    Back to searching!

sorry for all the noob questions! speakers arent my specialty!

Guy dropped his price to $100...this should be a good deal then now right?

also on craigslist, a pair of Pioneer HPM-100 speakers popped up for $40 which appears too good to be true if they are in good working condition. any thoughts?

100 is a good price for Monitor 10s. Do you know which version they are 10, 10A, 10B, etc.?

The Pioneers have a "vintage" following. Some rave about them, but they are a "Very" different speaker from the 10s. Your call. Certainly those Pioneers were more expensive in their day and if I'm not mistaken they are designed more to compete with TOTL JBLs from that period (at least they look a little like a JBL?).

40 dollars for a set of the Pioneers, regardless of what one thinks of them, is a steal if they work! Because you could flip them for way more than that!

What they're worth really depends on which model, what condition they're in, what's included (stands?; receiver and does it work nicely?) and what, if any, modifications have been done. I have the nicest pair of Monitor 10Bs I've seen in a long time - completely stock (no mod's YET), were bought new, with original Polk stands, in '88 by my parents and had maybe a couple hundred hours total use on them when I got them about eight months ago. They sat on the stands for maybe two years before being stored in their original plastic bags and original boxes in my parents' basement for over 20 years! They look like they could still be in the showroom and sound as good as they did back in '88. I wouldn't sell them if offered $300 - or maybe even $400, given their family-tie value for me. On the other end of the spectrum, you have ones that look like they were drug behind the car for a mile or two, have damaged and/or not working tweeters, drivers, passive radiators, cabinets and binding posts. Some - Frankenpolks! - have mismatched drivers, tweeters, etc.

The ones you posted pics of look like they are in pretty good shape, but one pic at that distance, and with grilles on, can be pretty deceiving. You can ask the seller questions to get a better idea as to where in that spectrum they fall. They may have Peerless tweets (loved by many on this forum), be heavily modded and in terrific shape, all things considered. Once you have an idea of what they actually are and a given price, then decide if they're worth going to have a listen. If the story, condition and price are in line with what you are seeing and more importantly, what your ears are hearing, then go for it! If nothing else, you'll learn something about what vintage Polks are like and how they sound.

    Good luck! Enjoy

Side note: I also got a pair of new Monitor 10Bs at the same time as my parents back in '88. From that time up until when I got my parents' pair, I moved at least eight times, each time bringing the 10Bs along. They had thousands of hours of use, some minor dings, scratches, smudges, some pilling of grille fabric, a stain from on top of one from melted candle wax and one "rounded" top back corner. A buyer was still very happy to give me well over $200 for them. The sound was still incredible!

    Thanks for the response ^^^^^

Those were just normal 10s and the stands were included but they were already sold when i contacted the seller....

For the HPM-100s, the seller has no way to demo them but insists that they do work. In a worst case scenario, surely i could get my money back for "parts or repair" if it was not a simple fix right?
