Help me Choose a new (used) AVR

I?m looking for a new dvr. I?m thinking the biggest feature I want is room correction such as Audyssey and overall good sound.
Do I need hdmi if I?m connecting my cable and blu-ray directly to the t.v?
I?m not sure if I should really care about video upscaling?
I use external amps, should even bother with a receiver? I would say my budget is around $800 for something used. I?m currently using a Onkyo 806 and would like to try something new. Thanks.

I'll tell you what, if you want to try some of the refurbs on the site recommended above and don't want to go Onkyo since you've already been there. Look at the Marantz 600X (newest = highest number you can afford) or maybe the GREAT deal on that Denon AVR 4310 (little older but has what you need).
You "do not connect the TV and Blu-ray to the Onkyo"? Why not? You cannot get HD surround format decoding unless you run the HDMI audio through the Onkyo! So you might want to rethink that since this is the best blu-ray audio format!
The Denon and the Marantz will give you a little less forward sound and might tame those emotiva amps some, "warm" them up for music!
cnhCurrently orbiting Bowie's Blackstar.!
Polk Lsi-7s, Def Tech 8" sub, HK 3490, HK HD 990 (CDP/DAC), AKG Q701s

Sounds like good advice, I'll start doing my homework. Your also right regarding the Onkyo and emotiva being a little forward. I didn't realize this until I added my dedicated 2-channel rig. When I only had HT for music, I though it was the shizits. Now I know better. I will give the Marantz and Denon a look. Thanks.
