Listing cost and selling cost and paypal cost are all different. So you can have a "free" listing but still pay the costs of the sale and paypal. With free listing promo if you didn't sell it, it wouldn't cost you anything. Normally Ebay has a listing cost (which is dependant on how you choose to list it) so even if your item doesn't sell you still pay a fee based on how you listed it.
I'm sure your invoice is correct.
As far as gouging? Please tell me where else you could post your stuff forsale in an International marketplace? Have you priced an newspaper ad lately. I get tired of people complaining about Ebay/Paypal costs. It's right there if you read the user agreements and these services are NOT free and you usually make more than with a Craigslist ad, etc. It's the cost of selling something in that marketplace which is well established and well used and gets a lot of looks.

Yeah, they priced themselves right out of my business a few years ago.
Even worse now.
I do not see how they can charge you a "final value fee" on shipping costs!
Here is their fee calculator if that helps:

point taken, brock...the kick in the -- i could have taken an offer from my audiogon ad and cleared more than with ebay..

Final value fees have always been a part of Ebay selling. Free listing is just for the listing (which is usually never more than 50c anyway). Final value fees have crept up significantly as others have said. At one point they were 2-3%, now they can be up to 13% depending on the category and type of listing. I try to avoid selling on Ebay now as well, but for some items, Ebay is the only way to sell for decent money. Example: About a year ago, I had this spare BMW Bluetooth adapter. I tried for months to sell it on the various Bimmer forums. Nobody wanted anything to do with it. Put it on Ebay and sold it within a day.For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

10% seems kind of high, but then I have no idea what you listed or how you listed it or what it sold for. Typically Paypal gets 3.5% or it may even be 4% now. Didn't you know all this BEFORE you used Ebay and Paypal? It amazes me people don't do a little research before doing this and then complaining after the fact.
Just an observation, not trying to trying to upset you sda2mike.

P.s. I buy way more than I sell on Ebay so I'm not sure of the exact current cost structure."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. you're not upsetting me!:) you're right i should have read the fine print..i sold a lot of stuff on ebay around 10 years ago...never saw fees like this...now, like you i buy on ebay mostly

This link really lays it out:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html
9% for all auction style formats now.
Fixed price format is cheaper for some categories, especially for electronics (7% of 1st $50, then 5% of rest), but for others, they really rip you (10-13%).
Ebay motors has a totally separate fee structure, so keep that in mind as well. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
thanks bill...i looked into it after the fact:redface:

The fee's have gone up a lot, I try to compensate by asking more for a buy it now or set my reserve a little higher to help offset the fee's. Depending on how desireable the item is you can do this. I rarely sell starting at .99c w/o a reserve, even though the insertion cost is the cheapest. There are some things I'd like to sell on Ebay but in the end they aren't worth much and by the time you pay the fee's it's not worth the effort.
If I buy something on Ebay that I know I have a possibility of selling rather quickly I try and buy as low as possible to offset future selling fee's.

I suppose when you look at a local auction house and their fees and the very limited audience to sell too then Ebay doesn't look too bad, I know my local auction house has a 25% sellers fee and a 10% buyers fee of course you don't have to worry about packing and shipping or having your item returned but you may only get $20.00 for an item that would sell for $200.00 on Ebay.
REGARDS SNOWWell, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all -
I just saw my invoice today also.
Like you, surprised me a bit.
I didn't have a problem with the sales fee, 10% auction fee is reasonable; it was the extra fee based shipping cost that irritates me.
But I'll still use it, they pretty much have us over a barrel. -
I forgot about the extra fee based shipping cost.
I can tell you exactly why they do that. It's because some people will sell an item with a $50 value for $5 and charge $45 shipping. In essence under the old system you'd pay almost no fee to Ebay for their services. The new fee based shipping charge is to keep people honest about shipping charges.
Again, so of these fee's are implemented because of customer abuse, blame them partly not Ebay or Paypal

Part of the reason Audiogon is so F'ed up now is they are trying to rein in sellers who were using the site for contacts then making outside deals to avoid paying the fees. A few jerkwads ruin it for the thousands who follow the rules. It happens in all walks of life.If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

I believe that too. Especially since Audiogon had very little recourse, why not just go outside of them and make a deal. I have to say I was quilty of that on a couple of very large purchases (upon sellers request)."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Damn. I haven't sold anything on ebay for a while. I don't recall paying anything other than the insertion fee...hmmm.

What's with people these days?
I'm as cheap as the next guy, but if you list something for sale be prepared to pay the fees they need to operate.
Same thing as a buyer, you found what you wanted to buy; don't circumvent the system; follow through.
And then we'll b***h about the costs we incurred to get something we couldn't find at Goodwill or the Salvation Army.
Who knows, maybe if more people followed the rules we wouldn't have all these p*ssant fees.
