Windows vista question.

Several months ago, windows vista on our computer began occasionally stopping us from running or saving and viewing files or attachments.

It was infrequent, random, and what would happen is, after hitting run button, a window would pop up asking if you wanted to run or save.

If you hit run, the window would pop back up, asking same question, and the file or attachment in a list underneath.

Repeated attempts would only result in the same popup, asking same question, just a longer list of the same file listing.

Yesterday after purchasing an oxygen concentrator online for deb and using docusign to finalize the deal, we were allowed to download our agreement to our computer, but then after trying to view the document, the window pops up again asking same question.

Was just an irritation before, but this is a 2700 dollar purchase.

Its a reputable co., and we know we can get paperwork via snailmail if necessary, but i just know that some stupid setting needs to be switched back or something.

Im not terribly computer savvy, and i hope i stated the problem clearly enough, any help is appreciated as always.

    Hey Scott,
I avoid Vista like the plague and I have not run into that problem, but I have a couple of things you might try.
First I would do a "Safe Boot" with network support, and see if the problem still shows up. I bet it does not.
    Using the F8 Method:

    Restart your computer.
When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows Vista Advanced Boot Options.
Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys.
Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Vista Safe Mode.
When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Vista will enter Safe mode.
Do whatever tasks you require, and when you are done, reboot to go back into normal mode.

Link to more instructions, including how to control startup programs:

I would also run a full scan using a good virus program like Maleware.
Also have you tried having the document sent to you via an internet based email like gmail or hotmail?

    Hope that helps yah :)

I nkow this isn't what you want to hear but it'll totally fix your Vista issue.

Dump it and install Windows 7. I bought a computer from Costco 3 years ago, an HP, with Vista Home Premium. 10 days after purchase it crashed with a "user profile service failed the log on message". It would not let me log on no matter what I did. Took it back as I lost confidence in it after experiencing problems so soon into ownership.

Ordered a Dell online, again with Vista Home Premium. Worked fine for about 2 years. After it crashed the third time I had one of our computer guys at work wipe the hard drive and load Windows 7. It has worked flawlessly for over a year now, it's faster and without the weird Vista bugs.

I'm not too good with computers either, which is why I had someone else do it.

    Good luck!

Good god. He just needs a setting fixed, not an OS reformat. Telling him to just dump Vista for 7 is like going into a mechanic with a wheel out of alignment and having the mechanic tell you to buy a new car.

OP, it sounds like you could be running into a combination of two problems. The following steps should fix it:

First, do the steps outlined in Method 1 here: http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

Next, run the .reg file contained in this zip file: http://www.howtogeek.com/geekers/ResetAllDownloadChoices.zip and click "Yes" or "OK" whenever prompted.

Reboot the PC and you should be fine.

I run a company that provides IT for SMBs. Many of the PCs I support still run Vista. There is nothing inherently wrong with Vista. There's been threads about this before...
