Today at one of my local Goodwill's they had, on the shelf, those USPS priority boxes, with a price tag. Those same boxes that can be gotten for free at any USPS office...

Could be worse, here all the Goodwills post all the good vintage stuff (recievers, speakers, turntables, electronics, ect) on their website and its an auction. So while its good because you can see what all the Goodwills in IN have selection wise, its bad because finding things like Maggies, Marantz and other good old stuff is about as expensive as audiogon or CL because they actually do look a bit for info on the items and a somewhat decent starting price .

They sell anything they have for a price for charitable work.
The place is manned by volunteers and people court ordered to do public service.
Your not shopping at Sears and Roebuck. Deal with it.

I am not disagreeing that its for a good cause.

Maybe its different here, but people here are NOT volunteers, or ordered to work there for court mandated reasons and most of the employee's make a decent wage from what I have been told (my sister-in-law worked at one for a short stint).

Anyway its off topic so I wont say anything further.

The Goodwill stores here in the south east are part of a huge conglomerate organization with ALOT of stores and they are $$$ oriented for there own payrolls. The CEO and his wife run it and make maybe 2 MIL last year between the 2. Employees are DOGed with orders and mandates and criteria that used to be a thing of the past. I've been going to the ones here long enough to know 20 employees and have heard the whole layout for years.

Labor camps are what they are here.

Good pay somewhat but you better not talk to long to somebody for your on camera and will be discharged quickly for to many instances of being IDAL.

Write ups are abundant for the petiest reasons. A shirt was left on the floor from the night crew...write up warning.... get the idea ? They go through employees like McDonalds used to. They can fire for what ever and even for "OTHER" as a reason that's not on a company list for reasons. With thousands just waiting to get hired, they treat people like shells that have to keep quiet and WORK. But they do hire somewhat not all there types to move furniture and they are the only ones who seem to keep their jobs. Managers are STRESSED beyond belief. I thought those days had been downplayed to meet the standards that were coming out of the masses in the past 10 years or more. But when the CEO and his wife got the taste of what their paychecks and bonesses could be........ This Goodwill chain of stores down here became business machines for their and their close friends pockets.

Their charity work is providing computer training classes online to better learn how to work the internet. ONline....give me a break.
They also bought computers years ago to maximize their pricing levels.

I still go because I like all kinds of things and some things still slip through at a very low price.

In closing, I have been to many others that are not affiliated with this conglomerate and they seem very lowbudget operations and have little to offer except what we all thought they were for. Those lowly Goodwills do help the needy in many ways and that's why their stores aren't anything as classy as these newstyle MEGA stores disguised as a comunity outreaching ORG. that helps those who need it.

These stores down in the SE help the CEO's !!!!

Look up their saleries....they are online somewhere.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

They sell whatever they legally can. What I find interesting is nobody in mgm't. at the store selling those boxes is aware that it is completely ILLEGAL to sell those boxes. It is illegal to use them for any other type shipping other than Priority Mail at the USPS, no less sell them.

It's funny they don't check stolen items.... I'd take a picture of the boxes and send them to the usps....

If people had any idea of the percentage of funds actually reaching those that they were designed to help through most charitable/non profits they would crap their pants. It is like anything else when it comes to money the more money involved means more greed.

I have actually spent some time donating hours to most of our local charity's, once you do this it can be a real eye opener. I just wish our local Salvation Army store would put out electronic items when they come in no matter the price but they wont, only old VHS recorders etc. I remember asking once after I seen a huge stack of vintage amps receivers etc and a set of Polk speakers and was told they had to be checked before they could be put out well guess what in the last 10 years not a single piece has ever made it past the checkpoint to the sales room.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

    Sure- blow in the charity!

Around here, I never see anything at the goodwill.
There's another local group called Christian Community Action.
They have pretty much become the go to for donations. Quick, polite,
and well organized. Mostly volunteers, and a very high % of what they
bring in goes to the right place. They have a small food market that sells
to the needy at a high discount(via grocery store donations).
Saturday afternoons there's a line of trucks and SUVs at their warehouse
dropping off garage sale leftovers. There's a crew sorting and unloading.
They have leased out a couple of old grocery stores to serve as sales outlets.

It is what it is. Some of course actually do as they were originally intended, others not so much so. There is all kinds of causes to donate to, check them out and find a few that your comfortable with. Like anything else there is both good and bad in all areas. We as a nation love to give and the dishonest/greedy know that and take full advantage, i'm all for giving back just don't take things for granted but be proactive is all.
