You are quite talented Duffman! I'll echo Airplay and also ask do you have access to the electronics from the opposite room(behind the built in shelves)?

Thanks guys! The guy who built my house actually lives in the same neighborhood I do and when I talked him about what I wanted to do he jumped all over it. So he did all the carpentry and I did all the electronics and wiring.

The TV was the biggest challenge. It's 29" deep and weighs over 300 pounds. It took 3 of us to get it in there; 2 held it half way in while the other did all the connections before we finally slid it all the way in - not for the faint of heart.

That wall is actually an outside wall so we had to build 2 bump outs to accomodate the built in shelves. The fireplace already had the depth to support the TV so we simply added a header and joists to build a "floor" for the Sony.

The Csi40 center is built in a custom box (surrounded by insulation) and angled about 20 degress down for better targeting.

For the Fxi30's I fished AR superflat speaker wire through the walls, removed the base boards and ran them behind and through to the shelving.

    Finished surrounds look like so:

As you can tell, I'm really happy with the results - glad you guys think it's cool too.

    Heya Duff.....

VERY nice execution on your set-up. I do have a few questions:

Is that a fireplace box only or is it chimeny'd up? The reason I ask is that I'm curious about heat build-up issues right above the fireplace being an issue....

Is the tv boxed in by the top molding of that area? Is it a 40" tv?

I see the reason for you keeping built in cabinets 2-3' off the floor, but if your speakers weren't there, would you want the cabinets to extend to the floor?

What wires are running from your speakers to your plates at the wall? Subsequently, what's running from your wall plate to your receiver?

Is everything running to the receiver that's to the left of the fireplace? You should post pics in system showcase showing everything, especially the 'in process' pics.

    Good job......

*It's a gas insert fireplace with direct venting out so there's not a tremendous amount of heat being thrown up other than the ambient heat out the front.

Is the tv boxed in by the top molding of that area? Is it a 40" tv?

*The TV border is more or less a frame consisting of fluted sides and crown molding top. Once the TV was in place the frame was attached, giving it that boxed in look.

I see the reason for you keeping built in cabinets 2-3' off the floor, but if your speakers weren't there, would you want the cabinets to extend to the floor?

*Initially my plan was to build it to the floor. The reason I didn't was because the gas line runs underneath the right side and it wasn't practical (read $) to have that gas line re-routed.

What wires are running from your speakers to your plates at the wall? Subsequently, what's running from your wall plate to your receiver?

*The wires in the picture are Monster 14 gauge four conductor (S14-4R-CL) and are also the wires running from the back of the faceplates to the receiver. My wife however didn't like the green wires so I've just swapped out the front wires with clear jacket Monster XP. The faceplates themsleves are Niles and I'm using Monster quick-lock banana connectors.

Is everything running to the receiver that's to the left of the fireplace? You should post pics in system showcase showing everything, especially the 'in process' pics.

    Thanks!

    One word..WOW!!
Excellent job. I tell you what, I concur with the TV weight issue. I have a 36" XBR and I could hardly get it on the stand, much less a spot like yours (and you 40" is about 50# heavier). I'm tired and sore just thinking about it :)

how is the height of the tv working with your setup? i'm just curious because it seems a bit high to me. i guess in most theaters you actually look up a bit so it might not even be noticeable.

looking at the before and after picture it is quite a jump. in the before picture the top of the tv is almost even with the mantle above the fireplace, in the after picture the bottom of the tv is a few inches (i'm guessing) about the mantle.

EDIT: by the way, it does look VERY clean. someday when i buy a house I hope i'll be able to run speaker wire in the walls and have everything look as polished as your setup looks.

    Thanks PhantomOG,

The height is no problem. In fact, as you stated, it gives the room much more of a movie theater feel.

I noticed in your before pictures that your couches were on the side walls. Have you moved your furniture around at all to have one facing in front of the TV? Or maybe just put a lazyboy for your personal optimized seating :)

Beauty of a set-up, does the fireplace still work?
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

I did end up moving a couch (not visible in the pics) to the "sweet spot" in the middle.
