Neil Young says it, so it must be true

on Page 20 of the new Rolling Stone:

Austin Scaggs asks Neil Young
"Is that part of why you're developing a new high-definition digital audio format?"

Neil Young:
"Technology has moved at such a lightening pace that it needs a new format. With MP3's, people only get five percent of the data that we were giving them in the Seventies. It's like listening to Fisher-Price records! I love music because of the visceral feeling in your body, your soul, your spirit, your mind, your heart."

Respect the man in many ways.

Why create a new format? Why not endorse/promote FLAC?

    Simple..............$$$$$$$$$$$

Create a proprietary new audiophile format, license it and viola more $$$$$. I sort of say that tongue in cheek because the last think Neil Young is about is money. He could make fistfuls creating sell-out music, but instead he forged his own musical paths, and making money/selling records was way down the list.

He also told us that we should whip our hair, regardless of whether it is long or short. In addition, there is also apparently a party in the USA.

I respect his attitude towards his craft, it always took precedence over popularity and making money and making friends. He is dedicated and willing to sacrifice to further his vision. He never became a sell-out, all that being said I am not a big Neil Young music fan. I like his earlier stuff, but atleast he stayed true to himself and followed his own vision.

I think ol'Neil gave MP3's too much credit! If Neil Young wants a new audio format, then he should just go ahead with that. I'm thinking fully encrypted hi-rez with an annual license fee to keep your decryption active.

I like Neil's music, and I think any advancement in the medium should be welcome.

^^^^That would be a nail in the coffin right there IMHO.

There won't be any advances until there's a way to get a return on investment. So those that are willing to pay will get something good, for everyone else there's MP3's. Works for me.

Any format that gets the nod from the big music wheels will be locked down hard.
They'd love to kill off the CD as it is. Expect them to go to an Apple style PITA
format that means you're locked to a provider, format, and device. No willy nilly
moving of music files from car to house unless you take your new **** with you.

Not to thread hi-jack but two interesting things about ol' Neal. 1) He played in a band years ago called the Mynah birds with "Super Freak" Rick James. 2) I believe he holds a stake in Lionel Electric Trains. Cheers.
