hey guys,

just like the title says, if i have an external harddrive or usb flash memory with music or whatever device via usb. can the oppo be used as an external dac, if so, how good is it compared to stand alone cd player on the sam price range (500)?

i have the oppo dv980hd that i use for cd playing only and was wondering if the next step should be adding an external dac or a player like the oppo.

anybody knows how the bdp93 compares to the dv980hd?

thanks,

eduardo

I do not think the Oppo 93 has a digital input, so it cannot be used as a DAC. It can be used as a CD/SACD player, and is probably as good as similar priced DVD players that play CDs. The Oppo 95 has a great reputation as a CD player, but costs twice as much.

my dv980hd reads usb drives, and i beleive that the 93 does as well i just would like to know how good it is, the 980 i did not like at all as a dac. it is a pretty decent cd player but was wondering if i will gain more buying a 93 or a stand alone dac (same price range)

Yes, you can use the Oppo 93's internal DAC. Is this just for music or will you be using the video portion as well? If it's just for music I would try an external DAC to use with you current oppo.

If the 980 sounds better with CDs than it does with USB then the USB interface is the issue. If you are trying to kludge something with USB drives then maybe you can kludge the Oppo 93 to be a "DAC". However, your $500 is better spent by buying the new Cambridge-Audio DAC Magic Plus.
