Look, I'm old enough to remember when stores went from paper bags to plastic. It was put forth that this was going to save trees, but the real truth is it was going save the stores a lot of money as plastic was cheaper. I'm also old enough to remember our roadways absolutely littered beyond belief. The solution to that issue was a long term public education program consisting of TV/radio ads and teaching school kids not to litter. There were also fines imposed, if caught. This is one program that actually worked. It worked so well that you never see or hear an anti-littering message these days. My point is that instead of banning plastic store bags (which is BS, IMO), they need to get back to educating the public that littering is bad because I can see the trend is reversing. What we get instead of a long term solution is a knee jerk, feel good reaction by a bunch of people that have no business being in public office.

Folks also need to be aware that the banning of plastic store bags is a slippery slope because next up will be trash bags, sandwich bags, freezer bags, soda and water bottles (and my God, what would people do without their effing bottled water ), etc.

    Mark my words!

Not trashing smokers Jesse, just those that throw their butts out the windows on the freeway. I had one clown dump an entire ashtray out the window. I had cigarettes bouncing all over my Jag, that I just had washed. I also witnessed a CHP patrol car flick his out the window less than half a mile from where the Sepulveda Pass burned below the Getty Center just days before.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em(or can afford them) but please do so responsibly.

Dumping a ashtray out the window....now thats just being an ****. Maybe if Californians didn't spend hours a day on those frickin freeways, they'd smoke less. Besides, how do we know it's not from people dumping their ashes from their one hitters out the window. That would look bad for those trying to get it legalized.

Chicago too is fairly windy, lots of traffic and smokers flicking butts out windows. We also have our fair share of woods and dry conditions. Not a single fire I can think of started in the same fashion. Flicking butts out a window is being an ****, but I believe this is more agenda driven than reality on the fire issue.

I see and no doubt it sucks that a brushfire caused so much pain and loss, but even the article you posted stated they were not certain what started it. For you to slam smokers because of that is way over the top.

A quick drive across Oklahoma and most of Texas during a dry season will turn up a lot of burned up
grass spots next to the highways. Why next to highways? Butts thrown out windows.
And driving at night makes it easy to see people doing it. Pretty hard NOT to drive at night
and not see at least one thrown out a window. And some *hole keeps tossing his butts in my
front yard along the sidewalk. Hard to defend when too many of your peers are playing
    Johnny Appleseed with the butts.

Driving back from Paris, TX. Last summer I jumped on the Indian Nation Turnpike at Hugo, OK. For the quick 70+ mile run up to McAlester. Counted 5 grass fires along the side of the highway big enough to require firefighter response and hinder visibility from heavy smoke. Guy at the toll gate said that most or all were from tossed cigarettes. Don't know if that was true or not, but I have seen fires started that way many times. Of course it was so dry at that time a firefly could set off a major blaze
