I'm hoping that one of you can give me some advice regarding some static I am hearing from my Yamaha HTR 5450 receiver (80wx5) wired via monster XP to my rti70's......
I've read numerous posts regarding hum/interference/static and how to eliminate it. I have been troubleshooting now for a couple of weeks and haven't gotten very far. Here are the symptoms:
-with the volume control at 9 o'clock static becomes audible at about 2-3 feet from the speakers. If music/tv is playing through receiver, the static is just slightly in the background, but pause or stop on the dvd/cd player exposed the background static again.
-as the volume is increased the static also increases proportionally. By 12 o'clock on the dial, the static in now clearly audible at distance of over 8 feet from the speakers. ALSO, the static volume increased and decreases with increases and decreases in the treble control
-this static occurs no matter what components are connected and even when NONE are connected. This occurs when there are no other components plugged into either the wall or receiver and cable TV is disconnected and unplugged and coax removed from general vicinity as well.
-when catv/digital catv are connected, the signal tv seeps into the static and is audible by the 12'oclock volume position on when the receiver is switched to ANY input
I bought this receiver through Best Buy with a plan. I brought the receiver in to the service dept. after being assured on the phone that they had someone there that could diagnose if there was a problem. The guy plugged it in and didnt' even listen to what I had to say. He just said, "all I here is a little static" to wich I replied, "well that's the problem." He just didn't listen to what I was saying and didn't see the problem. I went to the back and asked for their most knowledgable associate and went through my whole story. I told him I lived in an apartment and didn't believe the outlet or ground loop was really the problem here as I had this connected through grounded radio shack home theater protector/filter. He was sure it was the power source/ground, so I humored him and picked up the Monster stage II filter and took it home and re-set up my receiver and speakers.....
result.....NO DIFFERENCE.
-the only time the static has disappeared is when listening to sound from DVD in dolby digital 5.1 or digital dts signal (toslink from Panasonic DVD/CD player). As soon as a cd is placed in the player and the receiver switches to PCM or any other processing format the static returns. There is absolute silence while paused or stopped with the digital 5.1 signal coming through the receiver.
-the sound from my speakers/receiver is fantastic aside from that static
I'm wondering if this is probably a short in the sound processor or amp . I do live in San Diego on the ocean and suspect maybe the salt air, layer of dust on my circuitry has caused a short of some type. I love coming home to my speakers and home theater system and am cringing at the thought of sending my receiver away for a couple weeks, but this hiss is driving me crazy.
any opinions/advice would be greatly appreciated

HAHAHHA!!
3rd guy! 3rd guy!!!
My Yamaha did that, this other dudes yamaha did it.
Let me ask...
Is the 'static' coming out of just the main speaker tweeters?
If so, it is just the Yamaha amp section. Good day!
3 receivers, all similar problems - not an act of luck or anything related, it is there. I am not hearing things after all! OH WELL! I sold my Yamaha along time ago....- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
yep, only out of the main channels.
I went to a tweeter close by yesterday to listen to a Yamaha receiver at approximately the same wattage on some mid-end speakers. They said they had no filters or anything and there was virtually silence where my receiver had distinct static.
Luckily I have a 4 yr service plan, but I hate to do without a receiver for weeks and considering the attitude of the people at best buy, I don't have too much confidence in this getting worked out painlessly.
I just got some the new Zeppelin DVD's last night and can't bare to be take the receiver in for servicing until Monday.....by the way I HIGHLY recommend those DVD's, despite my static.
I guess I'll prepare myself for two weeks of silence. -
the weird thing is the lack of static during 5.1 digital/dts signal only
-
I dont know, I just learned to the live with it. I had the 5460, I sold it because it didn't have preouts. Now I have the Pioneer Elite VSX-41, and it dosn't have the static because I don't use its amps, and when I did - it still didnt have the static.
Anyhow, I hope ya get it all fixed up and everything, that 'static' is very annoying. Hopefully you will have better luck finding the solution than I did.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
with any luck they can fix it quickly and get rid of the hiss. I'm planning to call Yamaha's home office after lunch and see if they have any other ideas and to complain.
Thanks for your thoughts and confirmation. I'll post an update after having the receiver serviced.
