Gaming monitor recommendations.

Hey Guys,

I am completely enjoying making my own gaming rig from scratch. Thanks for your previous help selecting components. I got a wicked HT Omgea Claro XT card which sounds unbelievable. I will definitely be exploring my 2ch interests on PC as compared to my Apple system.

My question today is what 27" Monitor do you recommend for gaming. I like the big display and don't see myself going for anything smaller. I have been a Samsung guy for a long time, but this caught my eye: ViewSonic VX2753mh-LED .

Is viewsonic still a good brand? I remember them being known for quality back in the day.

Oh by the way, I'm thinking a budget of $250 to $450 is what I will allow.

For gaming, if you must go with an LCD panel instead of CRT (I cling to CRT), then at least get a 120Hz monitor. For a 27-incher, I'd go with a Samsung S27A750D.

That Sammy looks good, but I don't like 3D at all. Drives up the cost and never use it.

A monitor capable of 120Hz is going to be capable of 3D, so they will advertise it as 3D. Doesn't mean you have to use it for 3D. The 120Hz is what you want.

If you can, find a 120Hz monitor to try out somewhere and you'll see why. Just make sure it's actually running at 120Hz.

This is a large part of why I am sticking with CRT. The poorer color rendering, black levels, contrast, brightness, etc. that comes with an LCD panel I can live with. But 60Hz I cannot live with!

Ahh, I see. Thank you for that clarification. Do they even make CRT monitors anymore?

Stop using TN panel LCD technology and buy an IPS panel LCD. BIG difference... TN LCD's are cheap and what's in MOST LCD's for desktop use. People who do graphics use IPS screens for their accuracy.

Edit: I should add that IPS panels have a slower refresh rate then TN counterparts and are usually not recommended for gaming. Things may be different now from a couple years back.

Nope. Which IMHO is truly a damn shame. LCDs outperform CRT when it comes to geometry, power consumption, heat and size, but when it comes to the actual task of displaying an image, a high-quality CRT cannot be touched by any LCD. Black levels, contrast, brightness, response time, resolution switching, color rendering... Even a cheap CRT will blow an expensive LCD out of the water--there's just no getting around the physics involved.

I have a small stockpile of Samsung SyncMaster 997DF monitors for my own personal use. When/if 120Hz LCDs come down in price, I may give them a try.

IPS is more acceptable than TN for color rendering (although still nowhere near CRT) but for gaming you'll want the faster response of the TN. Most (if not all) 120Hz 3D monitors you will find will be TN.

Thanks! I think I'm going to get a Samsung 120Hz Monitor. To get an IPS with the same or similar input/output response in the same size, you end up spending 2 - 3 times more. That's just not worth it to me. I've seen cheap TN monitors that look incredible. Spending $499 on a decent 120Hz Sammy should snag me a pretty beautiful picture.

Good choice. But good luck finding one at $499. ;)

I guess I should probably mention that a 120Hz LCD TV is NOT the same thing as a 120Hz monitor, just in case anyone is reading this thread and thinking they can just buy a 120Hz TV and use it as a 120Hz monitor. You can't. A 120Hz monitor will take a 120Hz input. A 120Hz TV will not. TVs up-convert to 120Hz (or 240 or whatever is current now), but will not accept anything higher than a 60Hz input.

Oh right, I meant $599. On the topic of 120Hz, will my EVGA GTX 570 output that type of signal?

Hard to say regarding specific cards. From what I gathered with a brief Google search, you may or may not have to use the DisplayPort connection with an Nvidia card to get 120Hz on the Samsung monitor. So if your EVGA doesn't have a DisplayPort output on it you may need a different card to use it with that monitor.

Check to see if the output does refresh rates of 120hz. Not sure how nVidia's work to be honest. I would be surprised if it didn't.

Also, Syndil's right about the monitor vs TV comp.

I think you should just buy a projector. Mount it above you and behind your head and use a screen mounted to the wall. Hell if you have the space, 3 projectors in 3D surround. Now that would be ultimate bad ****.

It looks like a lot of people have issues getting 120HZ to work. HDMI is not capable of transferring the signal. Have to use the displayport.

Yeah that's a bummer if your EVGA doesn't have it. If you have the EVGA GTX 570 HD it should have DisplayPort on it, but if it's the non-HD model it won't.

I always thought the 24" ps3 monitor was cool @ $299 with a pair of 3d glasses. If you have a ps3 then you can do a co op if 2 people have glasses on and both see a completely different screen from each other, Its like having 2 monitors and it has built in sub n speakers

I know this aint what your looking for with the high end gaming rig but just thought I would post because its cool

"Cool" and "Quality" are two way different things. Not even in the same league.

I use a ASUS VW266H 25.5" LCD. For the amount I use my PC and gaming that I do. It's great. Great size. Tones of real estate being 16:10 aspect. While not perfect, I enjoy the picture I get from the TN panel used. Certainly no good out the box.
