Amazing to me the collective amnesia about The Great Depression, the causes and how we pulled out of it.

I hate to say this, but no one really thinks much about Wisconsin except the media which loves this left/right, right/left chasm that has torn our nation into TWO. And shows that there is NO end in sight. There are no 'real' majorities in the U.S. and each party is "deathly" afraid of the other winning by a few percentage points. American politics? What happened to us? A nation "united" not "divided". We can't agree about "anything" anymore.

What was not heavily noted is the war between the private and public unions in WI and why a significant amount of union members voted to keep the current governor.

I guess that would be interesting if I hadn't spent a lifetime witnessing how well Americans vote against their own interests most of the time? Voting is not a simple phenomenon in which people's life, education, and propaganda have no effect. I remember the "silent majority". I remember union members in Pa. voting for Reagan as legions were losing their jobs? My father's company went from employing 3500 to less than 600 in a few years (he was lucky to have retired in that period). In some ways that area of Pa. never really recovered but just slid into the two income family that almost made as much as the one income family before it.

Oh well, politics, are politics, are politics. They're mine and they're yours. And they're rarely of "one flavor". lol

But, isn't it great when one's beliefs are reinforced. Real politics are depressing. Read Max Weber's "Politics as a Vocation" for a better understanding of that.

I thought this thread was about the egg my brewers laid against your cubs, Tony.

At least that's what I'd rather talk about anyway.

Sooooo glad that 4 out of every 5 commercials per break will not be mudslinging ads when I go home tonight.

Thanks for deciding what other people's "best interests" are for them. It saves so much time and effort on our part, and we would probably chose incorrectly (according to you) anyway.

Just curious, what state do you actually reside in besides the whole "Lunar Module" thing?

Then we can see what the current overall politics of that state are, what direction it is going in, how things are working there, and then you can tell us if you agree.

Sorry you misinterpret me. I don't decide "anything" and never have. I've lived a life of quiet and disillusioned abandonment, always realizing that the "people" (regardless of who they are) are "always" right. And I am "usually" wrong! In fact, I've been "wrong" so many times I wonder why they even let me "vote"! lol

See, I agree with you! Or as Dr. Pangloss would say,"This is the best of all possible worlds!"

We pulled out of it because we had infinite resources, now we dont .........ffffffffffuuuuuuu.............

You could make a good case that we got into the Great Depression because of investor speculation on stocks without real value, and the assumption that values would always go up with no correction.

Not unlike the "Tech collapse" and "housing value collapse" that tanked our economy, or at least contributed. How many of us bought in on the Facebook IPO?

We now have governments (Federal, State, or Local) spending more (and foolishly too) than they "take in" with taxation. Their government solution is, of course, usually more taxation. Gov. Walker tried to reduce spending, or at least bring it in line with revenue and it worked. Look at the current financial situation right next door in Illinois to see how well the alternative, which is "do nothing" is working.

You could also make a case that we got out of the Great Depression with WW2. 60 million + deaths seems like a bad idea to me.

    Here's a damn good idea....
Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling:

"I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election."
    Political Correctness'.........defined

"A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a t-u-r-d by the clean end."
