I am an IC and my "employer" says i have to get OCC/ACC insurance through this one company. $18 a week, might not seem much but that's 8% of my takehome pay per week. I got in touch with the Washington State Gov L&I department and they say the state of Washington does not require IC's to have OCC/ACC. Any thoughts..??

I did do some 'google' research, and it looks to me, that as long as you meet all the specific 'tests' to be considered an Independent Contractor, you are not required to get insurance, by the law, However, your employer may be requiring it to reduce his Liability. As such, he can require it as a term of your employment, even though it is not required by the State law.
I ama guessing he is just covering his ****.......and reducing his insurance premium...
that sucks.... -
IRS's definition of an independent contractor is your employer can tell you the end result of what they want but not how you get there.
Pretty simple...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Make sure they document that it is required and update your contract terms. That way it is a requirement to earn the revenue and you are clear on the tax deduction for it.DKG999

Sounds messy and you're in a different state. But where we're at, depending on the nature of the "work", you can't be an IC without being "fully" covered--unless you want to risk being sued! I know it sucks when your income is fixed. And maybe Wa. has a different set of laws on the books. I think the guys above have you covered. Everyone who has done work for me (on my house that is) has had coverage .
But, perhaps you are not referring to construction work?

It doesn't sound to me like you're making enough money to put up with that much grief. Any other job possibilities that pay more $$$ ? One "bright" spot is, the expenditure should be a legitimate tax deduction, at any rate. Good luck !

Not sure what OCC/ACC is... but while they may have the right to ask you to furnish insurance, I never heard of anyone having to get it from one specific place only?
Perhaps they are looking for their ICs to be covered by their own Workmens' Comp; I would guess that they are simply looking to trim their own Comp expenses.
It would be deductible, that much I am sure of!So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Nope, I am a courier..specimans and whatnot. And nope, pay is lousy, but at least its pay and I get to drive my own car and play my own tunes Since being laid off since 2009 there hasn't been much going on in the job sector for me. MY job of 27 years was effectively eliminated, not only at the Federal Reserve Bank but all commercial banks also. Nobody writes checks anymore so nobody needs my skills or the skills of the folks that were also laid off. That fact along with my age makes it very very difficult to find alternative employment. Thus my courier of driver/courier was born. I love to drive, love to hear my tunes..hate the price of gas. Lots of driving, 40k plus since last July:eek:Computer room Hegeman 1 SpeakersM&K VX-80 subKenwood DP-7010Cambridge Audio CXC Transport Rega DACPrimaLuna Prologue Four AmpAric Audio Tube PreampGarage Jennings Research SquareCustom tube preampCrown XLS-1000Denon DCD-1500II Modded MSB Link DAC

Anything can be turned to a positive.
When i had my little landscaping business i couldnt afford such things, but instead of trying to hide it or let it be a liability, i worked it right into my signs and business cards.
Scotts landscaping, were not bonded, were not insured, and we pass the savings on to you.
There you go young fella, let that be a life lesson, now run along.humpty dumpty was pushed -

Jeez, seems like a proclamation like that, nowadays, would throw open the door for meritless, nuisance lawsuits and certain death by attorney fees. (nevermind actual judgements ) -
