Does anybody know if the L & R RCA outputs of the Squeeze Box are variable?, Can I just hook up the Squeeze Box to an Amp and and bypass using a Pre-Amp?

No you can't just hook it up w/o a pre-amp. Musical quality suffers if the vol control is less than full. It uses an inexpensive digital vol control. Leave it at full at all times and adjust the volume from your pre-amp for best results.

Thanks, audiocr381ve, for your helpful input.

I guess what I'm really interested in here is a way to get super-easy access to all the music on all of my CDs without having to dig through racks, shelves, closets, drawers, cars, etc. And, even more importantly, it needs to sound as good as it does from the original CDs. I've been less-than-thrilled by the sound of some other streaming audio (ie. Pandora) and the supposed "CD-quality sound" of the Direct TV audio channels sounds pretty "thin" when played through my home stereo.

I want to load the CDs in the most lossless (dense) format no matter what the storage requirements are since once this ripping process is done, I'd be very tempted to get rid of all, or at least a great deal of my CD collection. Also, I'd like the stored format to be the best available for later upgrades to the now-existing Squeezebox playback capabilities. I suppose it might also then be a good idea to maybe get an extra external hard drive to store a backup copy of all the ripped CDs. Then, I'd be much less likely to go completely mad when my laptop got stolen, spilled on, or otherwise damaged beyond repair.

Anybody know approx. how many CDs I could store in a lossless (FLAC, Apple Lossless) format on about 600 GB of free hard drive space I have? Are there any rules of thumb to make that conversion (ie. an hour of music per 50 - 60 MB) for estimating how much storage would be needed?

    I have 1781 flac albums on 550GB

I have 380 CD's in flac, it takes up 121 GB on my external hard drive. Rough approximation is about 35MB per song, about 300-350MB per album. (16bit/44kHz). High rez (24/96) is significantly higher.

Agree. While it can be done, quality suffers. Leave the volume at maximum and run line level to a preamp or DAC. It's a digital volume control, not analog.

Mine came in several hours ago and it's up and running already. What a great piece of gear. Super easy to configure. Now I'm going to have to go through that multiple page thread about the SBT tips and tricks :D

Just be careful with some of those so-called "tweaks." Enjoy, your wireless jukebox has arrived!

+1000, use it as is before monkeying around with it. Most of those tweaks can create other issues and I have found the few I have tried just aren't worth the headaches involved.

    YMMV

I have found no need to mess with the oem config, FWIW.

I cant seem to access "My Music"
On the squeezebox itself it tells me I have to d/l software. However that has been done. There is no "My Music" on the menu on mysqueezebox remote.
    Not sure what to do.

I am starting over. Uninstalled. Reinstalled. Rescanning

Ok it is now seeing my music. But now the remote on the computer is not seeing the squeezebox device. Gonna go to bed and deal w/it tomorrow.

Well it took a bit of work to get Squeezebox to see all my files. I had to scan them in incrementally. Everything at once was too much and it kept on getting stuck during the scan.

How large is your music folder? Mine is 373GB's at the current time. It will take some time for the initial scan. But once that's done, when you select "Status" tab upon opening LMS, at the bottom, change the option to "Look for new and changed media files". Hit rescan and Ok at the bottom. Do this every time you add music to your main library so the Squeezebox will see it. Scans will also take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute depending on how much music was added.

I have almost 2TB's of music. Flac albums, Flac Live shows, Mp3 etc.

Question. Can you use this device to stream something like Bonnaroo You tube streaming? http://www.youtube.com/bonnaroo

Not directly from that link, no. But if they have an internet radio URL you can add that to your Squeezebox. I wasn't able to find one in my brief Google search. Looks like YouTube is sponsoring the feed, so of course they probably want you to use YouTube to watch/listen.

This squeezebox is great except it seems to have problems w/my music. I added a few albums to my hard drive and the rescan doesnt seem to be able to find them. I wish there was a way I could just drop them into a folder and be done. I have had nothing but issues w/Squeezebox scanning my hard drive. Any suggestions??

The files may be incorrectly tagged. Try doing a search on the Squeezebox to find your music. Ideally, once you place your music files in the one folder (or multiple folders if you choose) that houses your music and you perform a scan for "new files", once complete, your files should register.

Try looking under "New Music" on the squeezebox. This usually shows your most recently uploaded music albums.

You do not need a separate DAC your Onkyo TX-SR805 AVR will do the job. Make sure you have updated it with the latest firmware. I have a TX-NR709 with the it's DLNA, and a DLNA client such as Mezzmo, it will stream video, audio, you can view photos, the whole thing. With all of the web based music services built into it I have no desire to even hook up the antennas for local broadcast radio.
If you don't already know about it here is the Onkyo support forum; http://onkyoproductsupport.forumotion.com/
