I just made it through episode 7 of the first season on Netflix. I'm not sure what season this show is on now...but the question is...does this show get any better at some point? Does it take a Soprano-esque turn at some point? I love the concept, but the execution of the show is nothing close to the Sopranos, The Wire, or Breaking Bad...what am I missing....

    I think if you don't like it now, you won't like it any better in the later seasons (hehe).

    It's pretty much the only non-sports TV that I watch other than an occasional Masterpiece Theatre. I really like it, but it's weird: I like it almost entirely for its cultural context. Sociological, political, popular, marketing, consumer product, and media references in the show all hold my attention. I was born in 1960 and enjoy remembering and re-examining that era (pretty accurately depicted IMO) to a large degree. I do enjoy the characters and stories even though it's just a dressed up soap. My son despises it for what I think he sees as pseudo-philosophical undercurrent, but I rather like that aspect. My wife enjoys it merely as a soap. There is interesting character development that you might find interesting if you continue watching. But what you've seen so far is pretty much what it is.

    I should add that I never watched the Sopranos or the others you mention, so I'm not able to compare.

    The seasons don't get better but also don't get any worse. We're waiting for Netflix to upload Season 5.

    My buddies told me I had to watch this show, so I tried it out. I got to about the 4th or 5th episode and I just wasn't feeling the show. No football, no basketball, I need to find a show to watch...

    The show is basically just a soap opera with very interesting art direction. The first season was actually my favorite, because it emphasizes all the sets and ad placement, character development that help place it in that particular time period. Once they establish all that, it's literally As the World Turns set in the context of a 1960's ad agency. I still watch it for the ambiance, but the stories are fairly dull, because I can't relate to them.
