I am setting up my HT system and will have RTi A7s for my main speakers and the CSi A6 for my center channel. Would OWM 5s and OWM 3s work as side and rear surrounds? Are they timbre matched to the RTi A series or should I look at the FXi A6?

Could you use the OWM's? Yes
But you will probably appreciate the FXi's much more. They have a bipole/dipole setting for location/reflection adjustment.

How large is your room? Do you plan on 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound?

The Fxi's will be a huge upgrade over the Owm's, but the Owm's will work fine. No they are not timbre matched, it's not crucial for the surrounds to be timbre matched but i'd take a 5.1 set with Fxi's vs a 7.1 set with Owms IMHO.

    Per the Polk OWM webpage:
they're timbre-matched for smooth integration into Polk Audio systems

Timbre-matched to what, they don't say...

I would go with FXI A's for the side surrounds and a pair of RTi's for the rear if your doing 7.1. You could also go with a CSI A4 in the rear and do a 6.1

    Rear: FXI A4

Good point, I just always considered them on par with the monitor series honestly.

I plan to do 7.1 surround but it is a small room as home theaters go. I am converting unused space that is 14'8" x 14'6"...not the ideal situation but I have to work with what I have. Originally I was set to go with TSi 500s, CS20, OWM5s, and OWM3s. Long story short, one of the TSi 500s was damaged in shipping and my store can no longer get them. They offered to sell me the RTi A7s for $25 more per speaker. Now I'm in the process of deciding to A) go forward with the RTi A7s and return the CS20 and the OWMs and replace them with the CSi A6 and FXis OR B) just keep what I have and buy another TSi 500 from another vendor. My original thought was go for the RTi As and CSi A6 and possibly keep the OWMs but now I wonder if it is overkill for my needs. Thoughts?

Go for the RTiA7s and if your budget and room layout work with the FXis - get 'em and don't look back.

Go with plan A. No such thing as overkill. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks for all of the feedback! It looks like RTi A speakers are the way to go. I do think that I will have to keep the OMW 3s for the rear surround for a 7.1 setup due to space constraints (and budget). I hope they will work OK for a while. Like the post above said, "they're timbre-matched for smooth integration into Polk Audio systems" but to what is anyone's guess.

You getting the FXi's too ? Or just going with the OMW's. Either way you'll be happy with the RTi, CSa setup. Get the FXi's and a good power amp when budget allows.

Chumlie is right....if space is the issue then go with OMW's but if it's budget the just run what you can afford....baby steps till you get what you want is my motto

    Good luck

    Cheers

I pretty sure when they first came out they said that they were timbre matched to the Monitor series. Now the Monitor series is out of production, so they probably just threw that vague blanket statement in...

Going to try to get the FXi A6 or A4 for my side surrounds and use the OMW 3s for the rear effects speakers. If it's not wise to mix the two then I'll probably just go with the OMW 5 for side surrounds and OMW 3 for rear effects. Your mention of a power amp brings up another good question...will my Onkyo TX-NR709 be enough of a receiver to run these speakers?

I would deffinalty mix and match over using all OMW's for surrounds. The FXI A4's and 6's are great side surround speakers. I woudlnt trade them for OMW's just to keep with all OMW surrounds.

Your Onkyo will run them fine. Later on if you want to upgrade you can always add an external amplifer since your avr has pre outs. The newer onkyo's hold their power better when you compair the factory rated 2 channel, and the Home Theater Magazine 5 and 7 channel power ratings.

You may find you don't even need or want the OMW's if you get a pair of FXi's. I would go with a 5.1 with the FXi's first, then decide if you still want the rear effects. The FXi' throw the sound around. As far as amps go. You really don't need one BUT it will bring out the best in those speakers. You will get a noticeabley improved difference in sound if you decide to add an amp or amps later. jbooker likes Carver, i like Parasound and others swear by Emotiva. Its really up to your ears and wallet to decide. I thought the a7's sounded great with my reciever but i fell into the rabit hole too. Still digging i might add. Get the best ya can now and add on later or save up to get what ya want because buyer remorse sucks.
