Looked at a few more today including the Canon S100. Liked the Canon a lot, but wanted more than 5x optical zoom. So, I'm charging my new Panasonic ZS19. On sale for $250! Any advice for my first round of pictures on this thing?

Figure out what it is you will normally use the camera for and try to create those situations (portraits, street photography, landscapes, etc..)... This way you can get an idea of what the camera will do in those situations and what you may need to work on to get better photos. When you start taking photos you intend to keep you are ready to go and not guessing at what you need to do.

Enjoy your new camera. From my experience, you should be able to take lots of great photos with it.

Digital zoom = no no for quality images. If you can, zoom with your feet!

Call it a day and get the Canon T3i with a nifty fifty (Canon 50 1.8 = $100 ish).

(I do this full-time now by the way)

I like to use the optical as well as my feet.

I'm sure that's a nice camera, but not exactly compact...pretty sure I don't want to walk around with that in my pocket.

My wife just bought a Canon A4000 IS, look Here We have a larger Nikon CoolPixthat we paid more than twice as much two years ago that has been a real lemon (been at the shop 6 months out of 22 months). I have not used the Canon camera very much since it's only a week old. But my initial impresession are very favorable. It has an 8X optical zoom, face recognition focus, image stabilizer, etc.
