It's actually been around for a while. I see it as a solution looking for a problem.

Agreed. To me, it's filling a gap that doesn't need to be filled. It's almost like a netbook, but it's pretty much required to be connected to the internet at all times to be useful; it is really not designed at all for offline use or to use stand-alone applications. In other words, it seems more limited than a netbook or tablet. One could even say it is more limited than a smartphone.

That said, I could very well be wrong, and it may end up taking off. Originally, I didn't see the need for a tablet/netbook to come along and fill the gap between smartphones/PDA's and a laptop/notebook either. Yet, here I am, sitting here with a Toshiba Excite 10 tablet in my hands. I've actually used it more than expected, and found it to come in quite handy a few times. It's only wi-fi, but I can (and have) tethered it to my 4G VZW phone for speedy internet access on the go. So, yeah, only time will tell.

In order for me to answer this thread I need to point out two things.

I hate the idea that my data is not physically on the computer. The fact that it is on a server miles and miles away is not something I like or trust either.

The second is if I need to bring up something on the fly I can not simply do that with a chrome book, I would have to find internet connect and than bring the document up.

In the end no I do not think they will catch on for someone who likes their data in their backpack or on a thumb drive rather than on a server. Or to those that have many GB's of data to store.

This is yet another idea that is morbid thanks to the iPad, and Android based tablets.

A 3G/4G laptop is a good idea, and I'm sure has a market as you would ditch the cell cards.

Cloud computing is the way to go and I am a big supporter. The concept of the cloud it is so much more than this. Security has and will always be an issue, whether it is stored on your storage or elsewhere. I am willing to bet that it is much easier to break into an individual's laptop versus a cloud provider's.

With that said, the chrome laptop is nothing spectacular.

See, I have no problem with Samsung. I have one of their 52" LCD TV's and it is great, even after 2 years. I also have a Droid Charge cell phone and it is fantastic as well. I absolutely love the OLED screens on the Samsung phones; as long as they're the only ones actively pursuing this, I will continue to buy Samsung phones. The new Galaxy Nexus is tempting as can be right now, though I'm not eligible for an upgrade until August.

Me too. Google Apps hosts my own business's domain and email, and I am currently in the process of doing a cost/benefit analysis of Google Apps vs. Office 365 for a law firm.

But still, I just can't see a need for a Chromebook. If it were dirt cheap compared to a netbook, then it might start to make sense. But it isn't. You can buy a netbook for the same money, run Chrome on it, and have pretty much the same functionality plus a lot more. So why limit yourself with a Chromebook?
