Studies gravity and gets it...

A German 16-year-old has become the first person to solve a mathematical problem posed by Sir Isaac Newton more than 300 years ago. Shouryya Ray worked out how to calculate exactly the path of a projectile under gravity and subject to air resistance....Wins award

    That 1st story is going to have a HUGE impact on my other hobby. I'm looking forward to what develops in the next few years:cool:

    My other hobby is.....um.....ballistics...so to speak:wink:

    This is total speculation on my part, and I am no engineer or egghead, but...
    If that story is inferring what I think it is, then the way they calculate or determine b.c.(ballistic coefficient) could be dramatically changed.
    Only the uber-geeks at places like DARPA, NAVSEA, etc. will be able to determine it's usefulness:confused:

    It is the Indian press that has made this out to be the greatest mystery in Newtonian mathematics, They really over did the story, but the Indian press does this when ever one of there own does something like this. This isn't in anyway to diminish what this young man did, it is remarkable that a 16 years had the advanced mathematical tools to work it out. The problem it self has not been solved but what is produces is already well known. The Army and the Navy figured it all out with years of ballistic testing. This was the reason why the first computer was built, Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer (ENIAC) it was used to compile ballistic tables. If you look at the fire control system on an M1A2 it's fire control computer uses temperature, air density, wind, barrel droop, barrel wear, etc to lay the barrel for a shot. This fire control computer even tells the tank crew when it is time to re-tube the main gun.

    3 links to some of the actual math involved:

    x or x(t) and y or y(t) are show position on the x,y axis with time t as a variable.
    u and v are velocity with respect to x and y.
    u = u(t) = dx/dt, v = v(t) = dy/dt.
