What about vinyl re-issues?
Hey Carl! I might be interested in the digital remasters, but I don't need any vinyl. It would be kewl to see the first seven re-issued in another vinyl box set. In retrospect, they might as well add Avalon and call it "All Eight" of their studio releases. The First Seven vinyl box sets were released in '81, Avalon was '82.

Their fifth studio album, Siren. It is also on some of their greatest hits albums.

A real "must have" IMO is, Bete Noire.

'' www.soundstagedirect.com '' 180g for $21 each
Tim Smith: I would have to add ''Stranded'' to that list. ( To bad Eno left the band )
SComp: Nice find, not easy to get.
gdb: Agree ''Bete Noire'' is a must. I would also put ''Taxi'',''Boys and Girls'' and ''Mamouna'' on the list of must have's. I have the whole catalog but those i couldn't do without. -
Don't think I have Boys & Girls, yet. You got the stripped bride ?

Yep.
But "Stranded" would be third for me, and obviously appropriately titled if you were stranded on a desert island.
Someone said that these guys had more great ideas on the first song of their first album than most "artists" have in a lifetime of music.
A really great book if you like early Roxy Music is "Unknown Pleasures-A Cultural Biography of Roxy Music". I have been a fan since the early 70's and have listened to their albums literally 100's if not 1000's of times, and there are fascinating things in that book that I never knew.Norh ACA-2B tube pre, Sumo Andromeda SS amp. Cool, i'll check it out. Also a fan since the 70's. They put on a great show too, back in the day. Seen Ferry here last year. He still has that voice. Did you get into Eno's albums, 801 or Quiet Sun. Eno's first 3 are killer.
Just ordered the book. Thanks. -

I grew up in the Detroit area in the 70's. Cleveland and Detroit were always tour stops for Roxy Music and had big fan bases.
Eno's "Here Come The Warm Jets" and "Taking Tiger Mountain" were/are weird and wonderful.
Have you check out the live version of "Baby's On Fire" on "June 1 1974 Ayers/Eno/Cale/Nico", maybe the "evil-est" sounding song I have ever heard.Norh ACA-2B tube pre, Sumo Andromeda SS amp. Oh hell yaeh, got it and love it. Love Kevin Ayers and John Cale's solo stuff too.
-
Cale is the man.
From the Velvets, to his solo work, producing the first Modern Lover's album, the first Stooges album etc.
Roxy Music "Live at the Apollo" from 2002 is a reunion album of sorts with Bryan, Andy, Phil, Paul etc (sadly no Eno). Playing all the old classic songs. Amazing sound an visuals. Lovely "Roxy Girls" too. That was always a treat on the album covers and concerts. Kari-Ann - WOWSA!
If you have Netflix, I recently checked out "Roxy Music - A Visual History" 1972-1987? 2-DVD set, great early videos, mostly ones I have never seen before from the Virginia Plain/For Your Pleasure/Stranded era.
Watched with my 19 yr. old son, he said "That's cool".Norh ACA-2B tube pre, Sumo Andromeda SS amp. Magneplanar MMG speakers, M&K MX1250 Subwoofer, Pro-Ject RM1.3 Genie TT with Sumiko Pearl MM cart., Keces DAC, Cambridge Audio Azur 640c CD player -
Fun turning the children on to good music. Took my 25yr old to see Roger Waters. Finally starting to get away from the rap.
-
Fun to try to help the kids discover vintage stereo components too.
Set my 23 year old Daughter up with a modest vintage system including a HK 330C receiver and some A/D/S L-690 speakers. I was amazed how good it sounded for a little over $100 invested.
She went to Paris for a semester overseas and back for a 6-month internship (I'm still not sure how we afforded that, but can't afford another $100 stupid piece of "old stereo equipment".
When she returned and a friend returned her stero, she asked me to stop by because it "didn't sound right". I checked all the wiring and it sounded good to me. She look mystified and said it didn't sound "right". I asked her to explain , so she took out her phone and played a distorted, compressed crappy song and said "see...it doesn't soundlike this?"
SIGH.......Norh ACA-2B tube pre, Sumo Andromeda SS amp. Magneplanar MMG speakers, M&K MX1250 Subwoofer, Pro-Ject RM1.3 Genie TT with Sumiko Pearl MM cart., Keces DAC, Cambridge Audio Azur 640c CD player -
Sounds like my brother. ALL his music is downloaded. Thinks i'm crazy for getting sacd player, fixing my turntable, buying an amp and spending money on wires. I told him the differance is i actually listen to the music. As long as he hear's it he's happy.
SIGH....back. -

#1) Roxy Music. AKA Virginia Plain.
#2) For Your Pleasure.
#3) Stranded.
#4) Country Life.
IMHO Thats the best of them all. No doubt your gonna love Siren, but to truely enjoy Roxy Music your gonna have to get their first 4. Any Roxy fans correct me if you think i'm wrong. Sorry bud, Just speaking my opinion. Listen to me now and believe me later. You love Neil Young. Trust me, PLEASE. -

Yeah, style changed due to personnel changes. Avalon was looked upon as a more mature album. If you agree that Avalon is more adult, allow me to also like the previous less mature stuff.
This is as good as any opinion of the bands history.

While this sounds contradictory, I like when bands change their style but don?t always like their style change. It makes for the big V word, variety. With Roxy, I liked it all.Salk SoundScape 8's * Audio Research Reference 3 * Bottlehead Eros Phono * Park's Audio Budgie SUT * Krell KSA-250 * Harmonic Technology Pro 9+ * Signature Series Sonore Music Server w/Deux PS * Roon * Gustard R26 DAC / Singxer SU-6 DDC * Heavy Plinth Lenco L75 Idler Drive * AA MG-1 Linear Air Bearing Arm * AT33PTG/II & Denon 103R * Richard Gray 600S * NHT B-12d subs * GIK Acoustic Treatments * Sennheiser HD650 * -
So do you agree with me or not. I love all of it but IMO first 4 are still the cream of the crop.

Rich,
I have a Japanese pressing of "Avalon" that is much better than the 180 g reissues. The SACD of Avalon is one of the best SACDs I own.Carl -
Pictures up at Amazon. 10 cd set, no dvd's.

Still going up in price. Started at $98, now $135. Damnit.

You dog:cheesygrin:! You know I love Japanese pressings, I have a WB. I also have the SACD. Back in Feb of 2012, a sealed Roxy Music Avalon SACD on ebay had a starting bid of $500 with a $725 BIN (buy it now).
