So the girl and I are doing something we've both never done before... go on a day road trip to another big city to watch a concert. Going to the Dream Theater show on June 27. About a 7-8 hr drive to Minneapolis depending on variables.
Just curious for any of the locals as to what we should check out being our first time there. Still need to find a hotel somewhere remotely close to the venue which is dead downtown - at the State Theater (Link).
Don't know the next time I'll get to see these guys so I'm looking forward to seeing them again.
Any tips, suggestions, demos (I'll bring beer ) or otherwise are appreciated.

PM NooshinJohn, he used to live up there and I believe his mom still does..."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963)

I don't live there and I don't really know anything about the place except for the awesome Minnesota accent. That said, Dream Theater is effing awesome; I'm jealous!
6th row back dead center of the stage... I'm stoked! -
Henepin Ave, lots of good eats and pubs in that area, Valley Fair is a good spot, not a mall guy but Mall Of America is worth checking out at least one time. Northrup Theater is also a good spot for a show, seen quite a few concerts there, lots to do in the Twin Cities. I hope you enjoy Dream Theater, good show.Home Theater

Enjoy Dream Theater. The historic State theater on Hennepin Ave. is a wonderful place to see a show. Been there many times. heck out the Rock Bottom Brewery on LaSalle when you are in town. Have a great time!

+1 to mall of America, loved camp snoopy. Legoland there is worth the trip by itself, IMO. -
Bumping this up.
Leaving Tues morning bright and early. We got a good deal on a hotel with this priceline site that was suggested to us. Very weird experience for anyone who hasn't tried it yet. -
Surprised no-one else has replied to this as there are at least a few Polksters on this site that live up that way...Remember, when you're running from something, you're running to something...-me

No one with LSiM's for me to hear. Would love to take in a fellow members setup, especially tube. -
Worst timing ever. I just had the LSiMs and am getting possession of my new house tomorrow morning at 10, so we literally have everything packed up / in the process of being packed and will be moving over the next few days.
I'll also be at the Dream Theater concert. Row L if I remember correctly, in the aisle seats, so also basically dead center. I'll probably have a good view of the back of your head rocking out during the show!
As far as downtown places to go, I don't spend much time there, but when I do, I focus on good beer and food, so those will be the basis of my recommendations.
If you want a fantastic steak dinner, you timed this perfectly and should go to Murray's on 6th street. If you go before 6:00 on a week night, their 3-course steak dinner is $30 or something like that, and is AWESOME. If you feel like spending more, you can get the filet cut, but at $30, it's worth trying the lower-end cut just for the value. If you're looking for a good burger, chili, and/or milkshake, go next door to Ike's.
If you want a nice beer garden with a good bourbon AND beer selection, check out Butcher and the Boar on Hennepin and 12th (approximately). They have a limited food menu in the beer garden, but the footlong hotdog is amazing (trust me, I was skeptical at first, too).
If you're interested in beer, check out Mackenzie (can't remember the address for sure).
...and if you're not interested in beer, bourbon, or good food, then I can't really help you

First of all, this city is massive. Such friendly people around here minus the odd bad cab driver. Nice to drive with people who know HOW to merge...
I wish you well with your move! Least the weather will be nice but hot.
We went exploring a bit. Find the venue, have a bite and take a few pics. I admit, easy to get lost We ended up at Dan Kellys on 7th for a bite and beer. Thanks for the suggestions.
We will be on row F. If you want to do a beer before the show or anything, send me a pm with a way to get a hold of you. -
Drenis: I've stomped those grounds!!
Can't believe I missed this thread - I've got some great ideas for you as far as "to-do's" in the Twin Cities - ranging from just "Nice!" to "Wow, Awesome!" to "OMG! WTF is that!"
I'll PM you a way to get ahold of me - I'll be up for a little while yet, or you can reach me after morning rounds - anytime after 10 a.m. or so. -
Teekay, got your PM. I'll give you a call later this morning.

I'm bumping this thread up because we're going back to Minne the weekend of February 9-10. This time it's for the GF as we are going to see Coheed & Cambria in concert.
Who wants to have a few beers?? Would love to hear some stellar rigs.
